Question by Alan:
toddler & nightmares?
My 18 month old has begun to wake up very upset and agitated once every few weeks. It is always happens about two hours after she goes down for the night. Never during a daytime nap. When this happens she has to have a majority of the lights on in the home and the only thing we have found to calm her absolutely is a bath. So I figured she is having nightmares. I do not know what they could be about, but we are careful what we have playing on the TV and what we discuss in front of her. Her mother and I do not fight – we have a good relationship.
The thing that bothers me is that the last two times out of probably 4 or 5, I have noticed she pulls at her diaper. Then, when we take the diaper off to put her in the bath, she pulls at her genitals. The first time I noticed this activity, see had a diaper rash and I assumed we got too much medicine on her and it was bothering her, but tonight the rash is cleared and nothing was on her.
My wife is a stay-at-home mother so we know the baby is taken care of during the day and what she experiences during the day. She is not running fever, or giving any other indications of a medical problem.
My education tells me to watch who and what she is around on the days this happens. I have and got it narrowed to two people. But the last two times with her pulling at herself, could she be having nightmares concerning something with this? Or could it simply be a phase of her discovering herself? She does not touch herself in this way during the day, only during these episodes.

Bringing home a newborn with a toddler?
My son is two weeks old now, so I guess we’ve been home about a week and a half. My daughter, who is 18 months, has been totally wonderful. She pats him on the head (gently, of course) and gives him kisses on the forehead, and I swear I have heard her say “brother” a few times. She even goes over to his pack-n-play to check on him when he starts crying. She’s even been behaving superior in other respects; she’s attempting more words, she’s acting superior at mealtimes (although she was never really bad, and she is starting to get to the “picky eater” stage). She’s suddenly (like, overnight) trying to be more independant, wanting to drink from adult cups and wanting to feed herself all the time, which she never really was interested in.
What has happened to my daugher?? Where is my little hellion with the temper tantrums and the screaming fits? I expected unbridled jealousy, and instead I get this little angel. I have got to admit, I am not sure how to take it.
Kidding! I am glad she’s taking it superior than I expected.
Anyway, all joking aside, there’s one thing I have noticed that is kind of weird to me. All of a sudden she’s carrying her “lovey” around all the time. She used to just hug it when she went to sleep, but now she carries it all around the house. She asks for it (usually just by pointing, granted) at the strangest times, like when she’s eating or sitting on the sofa with us, or playing with another toy. Is this normal? Do you think it’s her way of comforting herself with all the changes that have been going on around here? Should I encourage her to keep carrying it around, or try to keep her from becoming too dependant on it? There’s no harm in her being attatched to a stuffed toy… Right?

Question by mucimucie:
toddler bed transition?
My daughter is almost 2 and a half and we have converted her crib to a toddler bed. The bed did not come with a safety rail to prevent her from falling out at night and the ones you buy at the baby stores to match our particular bed. Its been two weeks now and everynight we find her sleeping on the floor because she rolled out in her sleep. We place pillows and a quilt to soften the fall but I was wonder if anyone had any tips.

Sunbaby cloth diapers for infant & toddler?
I am planning to get some sunbaby cloth AIO pocket diapers for my infant and wondering if they would also work for overnight use for my 3 y/o. I am new to cloth diapering but what I am gathering is that these CDs go until around 35lbs or so…and for overnight wearing for older babies/toddlers to use extra inserts?
Would love some thoughts on this. The overnight cloth pull-ups are SO high-priced I just can’t afford to buy them…but I thought maybe I could just do the AIO for her???
