Question by Melissa:
any tips on getting rest when you have a toddler……?

Can you share any helpful tips on getting rest when you have a toddler and a newborn baby? I have an 18 mo. old tiny boy and a j10 day old baby, and am not getting enough rest, and my body is having a hard time coping. I get weepy and I am bleeding a lot because I have to keep up on the housecleaning and mealmaking……..is there anything that will help? I already take a nap when my toddler does, but is there any helpful tips on meals or anything that you found??

could use some tips…?

okay, at the end of this month I am moving 5 hours away to be a fulltime nanny for my adorable baby nephew when his Mother goes back to work…I’ve cared for my nieces before and spent time with babies and love them so much..i just kinda wanna know what to anticipate and what I can do to be the ideal caretaker for him…I’ll be with him mostly from 7am-3 pm weekdays…should I anticipate him to be on a pretty regulary feeding/ napping schedule by this point? you should know he arrived about 7 weeks early and he will be 10 weeks old and just over 6 lbs..(YAY! he is over doubled in weight since born!) when I begin to care for him full time..any baby tips, Books, and adjustment changes to anticipate would be great…I want to do a great job for him and I love kids….THANKS!!!!!!!!~

Answer by pinky
he will not be on too much of a regular schedule yet. will probably still take 3 naps a day from 1-3 hours each. ( for the entire day ) the first nap will usually be between 1 and 2 hours after waking and i have noticed that is my son’s longest nap. keep burprags handy and my son loved mobiles at this age. also, anything to kick at. i would also take him for a stroll. he will begin seeing further away and pastels in 2 weeks so outside is fun. have fun and speak through everything.

NEWBORN QUESTION ABOUT SLEEPING/NAPPING? http://birthpolicy.org/395/newborn-question-about-sleepingnapping/ http://birthpolicy.org/395/newborn-question-about-sleepingnapping/#comments Wed, 10 Nov 2010 18:49:24 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/395/newborn-question-about-sleepingnapping/ Question by Brandi E:
newborn question about sleeping/napping?

My baby is 6 weeks old (on Saturday) and we were at the pediatrician’s office Tuesday for feeding issues. Her colic is so bad that she was eating about half of what she had been previously but the doc stated she is eating and gaining and that there is nothing to be worried about. Yesterday was a horrible day-she cried for 7 hours with maybe an hour break to nap. She was so exhausted she kept crying and still wouldnt sleep. This day the same thing-she slept last night but is obviously still exhausted and wont sleep. We have started to change her formula and are doing that gradually and she gets over the counter meds for her colic. If she wakes up at all-she cries and doenst stop. The only thing that makes her stop is to be in a sling or be held-even at night. She now has to sleep in bed with me and my husband (or at least fall asleep there) or she cries all night long. Is this just horrible colic or do I need to call the physician again? How do I help her sleep? She hates being swaddled (she gets really hot and sweats when/if she sleeps) and I have tried all the other tricks, vacuum, lavatory fan, vibrating chair, swing, etc they all work for a few minutes but once she wakes up a tiny bit she cries. I think she might even cry in her sleep. Any suggestions/tips…
I cant breast feed- I didnt have enough milk coming in for a feeding even though we pumped and now the milk has dried up. That was what I wanted to do but some how it just didnt work out that way. We just switched (or started) the formulas yesterday-still doing the gradual change so it doesnt upset her more. The meds shes on is for colic-gripe water, and colic calm. The issue is that since she is gaining weight the physician doesnt thing anything is wrong with her. She is eating and gaining weight so to them that is all they care about. I go back to work tomorrow so I cant hold her all day long-even though I’d love to do that. I dont mind holding her I just dont want her to be in pain.

Answer by New Mamma
Colic is definitely something hard to deal with. Try asking your physician or OBGYN to take a recording of your heart beat and to put it on a tape/cd. Play it so your baby can hear it (softly but just enough to hear) and it might calm her. Its something she has heard throughout pregnancy. I have heard this sometimes works cuz babies w/ colic do not like being alone. Spend as much time with her as you can and slowly begin watching to see what kinds of things seem to calm her down. Good luck!!!

BABY NAPPING WITH TODDLER IN HOUSE? http://birthpolicy.org/318/baby-napping-with-toddler-in-house/ http://birthpolicy.org/318/baby-napping-with-toddler-in-house/#comments Fri, 05 Nov 2010 18:43:49 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/318/baby-napping-with-toddler-in-house/ Question by Goalie Geetar Grl:
Baby Napping with Toddler in House?

How does your baby sleep coincide with an active toddler(s) in the home? What are some tips to help develop good sleep habits?

Answer by Emma&Laura’sMumMum
My 2nd daughter was born when my other daughter was 15 months old. She was used to noise from the beginning so I guess they just get used to it. She napped in the living room in a cradle while the older one played. I think at about 4 months when she got on a more regular napping schedule I started putting her in her crib in her room for naps……….we never had any problem.

As for tips……….swaddling is about the ideal one I have and try not to keep your toddler too quiet or it might backfire.

ANY TIPS FOR A FUSSY NEWBORN GIRL? http://birthpolicy.org/239/any-tips-for-a-fussy-newborn-girl/ http://birthpolicy.org/239/any-tips-for-a-fussy-newborn-girl/#comments Fri, 29 Oct 2010 07:53:22 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/239/any-tips-for-a-fussy-newborn-girl/ Question by WHAT?:
Any tips for a fussy newborn girl?

My daughter has been really fussy the last two days. She is breastfed and eats very well. She sleeps well at night waking only to eat or to be changed. But during the day she naps for only 15-30 minutes and she seems irritable. Her poop changed a tiny in color from yellow to greenish. What I have read and heard about so far is that this is normal. But since this is my first child I am naturally concerned about each tiny thing. Experienced Mother’s are more than welcome to reply….Thank you…

Answer by LuLu
She might have gas. Give her some mylicon drops. when my daughter was newborn, she kept gas. It made her tummy injured and she would cry alot. She could have colic too. Good Luck!

ANY SLEEP TIPS WHEN TRAVELING WITH AN INFANT? http://birthpolicy.org/213/any-sleep-tips-when-traveling-with-an-infant/ http://birthpolicy.org/213/any-sleep-tips-when-traveling-with-an-infant/#comments Sat, 23 Oct 2010 20:44:02 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/213/any-sleep-tips-when-traveling-with-an-infant/ Question by kiddos:
Any sleep tips when traveling with an infant?

My 4-month old is sleeping really well in her crib now. She is able to go down for naps by herself; at night, she usually nurses to sleep and I am getting up once a night to nurse her. I am a tiny concerned b/c I will be traveling with her when she is 5-6 months, and I wonder how she will sleep in unfamiliar environments … especially if she is used to a crib and is then put to sleep in a playpen.

I have heard that it’s a good idea to put her in a different environment for 1 nap/day now in order to get her accustomed to new places. I have not tried it yet b/c she only recently started napping so well. — Has anybody tried that technique with or without success?? Does anybody have any other tips or experiences with sleep and traveling?

In short, I just do not want her to “un-learn” her good habits when we travel. I’d love some advice from experienced moms!

Answer by brina
have her sleep in her play pen (the one youll be bringing with you on trips) for her naps, or a couple nights a week. I would begin asap, to make it easier on her/him.

Good luck.

TIPS ON CONSOLIDATING BABY NAPS? http://birthpolicy.org/185/tips-on-consolidating-baby-naps/ http://birthpolicy.org/185/tips-on-consolidating-baby-naps/#comments Sun, 10 Oct 2010 22:43:59 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/185/tips-on-consolidating-baby-naps/ Question by Lynh Brooks:
Tips on consolidating baby naps?

My daughter is 7 months old and she adores to cat nap. I have been trying for 2 months to consolidate her naps. She still naps 4-5 times a day and only sleeps for 30 minutes at best. She is had the same sleeping pattern for the past 2 months – as in she takes naps at the same time, purchase they keep getting shorter and shorter!. I try to push back her morning nap to an afternoon nap, but she screams bloody murder. I have even seen her fall asleep while sitting and even while holding onto our sofa and standing. Any advice?
I’ve tried making the naps shorter, but when I wake her up from a nap…she literally falls asleep sitting or standing up. Or she will not wake up at all. She is slept through our building’s fire alarm going off…

——————————————

Answer by chrysie
try making the naps you want to eliminate shorter and shorter and the naps you want to make longer, should then be easier, due to her being more exhausted from the shorter naps. i hope that made sense!!!

I have a two-month-old baby. He sleeps in his crib at night without any problem but there is no way he would fall asleep in his crib during the day. If somehow that happens any noise wakes him up. he falls asleep in a automobile seat, in the stroller or in the swing. Any tips?? Thank you!!!!!!!
