I have two young kids that are close enough in age to share toys. I’m worried about them also sharing germs. My eldest has a cold, and I want to keep Sara from catching it. Is there a disinfectant wipe or a spray that’s safe to use on toys, highchairs, etc.? I’m worried that the chemicals in a spray will be worse than the germs.

Answer by LeeLee
You can use a tablespoon of clorox with 8 oz of water

Question by :
How did you get your toddler to stop sucking their thumb?
My daughter is only 15 months but we are having another baby around her 2nd birthday and wanted to stop her thumbsucking. She doesn’t suck her thumb in her sleep, but does when she is tired, upset, zoned out or doesn’t feel good. Definitely a comfort thing for her. How do I correct this? Does anyone know of something safe I can put on her thumb? Two of her bottom teeth are already angled in and I do not want them to get worse. She used to take a pacifier when she was an infant but she started to take it out and suck her thumb at 4 months. Now, she thinks pacifiers are toys. She will put them in her mouth for a minute or so but then take it out when she is bored with it or take it out when she wants to suck her thumb. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to do? Thanks in advance.

——————————————

Answer by Fidel Castro
my mother put tobasco sauce on my thunbs in the 90s and i have not sucked my thumb ever since

Answer by K
Have you actually talked to a dentist to ascertain that there is a teeth issue here? Because the two angled-in teeth at the bottom are pretty normal.

Statistical difference between kids whose parents pushed them to give up the thumb and those whose parents left them alone: the latter category gives up the thumb earlier.

“Does anyone know of something safe I can put on her thumb?”

This is in league with “What’s a good way to burn her teddy?” Don’t.

Answer by Meow
My sister sucked her thumb until she was four and my mother found some unsightly teeth photos on the world wide web and stated “Look, if you keep sucking your thumb your teeth will look like this!” and it scared her so much she never sucked her thumb again.

——————————————

Question by JackBlack:
What do I need for babies ages 1, 2 & 3 they are foster babies and coming tonight, we are not prepared! HELP!!!
Ok, my husband and I are foster parents and usually take older (elm-middle school) kids, but we were called this morning with an emergency placement of 3 siblings… girls are 1 and 3 and a boy that is 2.
We do not have ANYTHING baby related nor have we ever had babies of our own so I have a few “dumb” questions. CPS will be there to help, but I do not want to be unprepared or seem incompetent! I guess the main things I need to know are…
* what size/types of automobile seats (how old do kids need to be to not use one or to face forward ect?)
* Food- what can they/can’t they eat at their age? Formula, bottles? or cups? baby food? ahh! hehe!
* what size clothes and shoes?
* What size diapers, do we need a baby potty?
* safe toys they can all share?
* Cribs, playpens, sleeping arrangements?
* anything else you think we need to know!!

Don’t get me wrong, we will take excellent care of them and do all the research we need to, but I have only got a few hours to run to Wal-Mart and get the essentials!
Their mother is in prison and father’s not in the picture, they are in a hospital now and will leave there this day and come to our home with just what they were wearing when they were taken from home. They are all healthy but all 3 tested positive for meth and marijuana – they were in the hospital to get through withdrawal. I wish they could come with a comforting item from home, but it’s not possible. I am so nervous, but excited and my heart just hurts for these babies, I really want our home to be comfrotable for them! Thanks so much for any/all input!!!
Oh, another question, all three can sit in automobile seats in the back of my husbands truck, but in my automobile one will have to sit in the front… is this legal/safe? I drive a company car- mini van, but there are only 2 captains chairs in the back, the last row was removed and replaced with a shelf?? Thanks!

——————————————

Answer by !SoBusy!
1) all 3 kids need the forward facing automobile seats. The 3 year old might even be huge enough to be in a high back booster. It just depends on height and weight.

2) none of them should be on formula. At 1, they begin drinking whole milk. I would recommend using sippy cups for all of them. The youngest will probably benefit from the Gerber toddler meals, but the others can all do “regular” food. Do not forget to pick up some toddler utensils. I even like using the plates with the dividers. Its not a necessity though.

3) clothes and shoes just depend on the child. Generally speaking, they should be in the size of their age. 12 months, 2T, and 3T. Some kids are more massive and need a larger size, there is just no way to know for sure until you meet them.

4) Diapers, again, are based on weight. I would assume a size 4 would work fine for the two younger ones and maybe a 5 for the oldest. A potty chair would be a great idea, especially if the oldest has already been working on potty training or is already potty trained. Do not forget to pick up some baby wipes!

5) just typical age appropriate toys are fine. Learning ones are the ideal in my opinion. I am sure the girls would like a baby doll and the boy would probably enjoy a “spiderman” toy or something like that just for fun.

6) Beds? Hmmmm….. You could get playpens for money saving, but the oldest will probably just want a regular bed. No need to purchase a toddler bed.

Other than that, I am sure you will do fine. You will just get the hang of it as you go. Bless your heart! This is so sweet what you and your husband are doing. CPS will offer tons of help and advise, so do not feel silly for asking. In fact, I would contact them PRIOR to buying a lot of stuff to see if they offer any assistance with this type of thing. Perhaps the kids already have some or most of the essentials. Good luck and God Bless!!!

Answer by MercurialMe
just for the moment I’d purchase pullups. A baby bottle, kids in crisis tend to regress (for the 1 year old just in case). And make spaghetti. They can all eat that.

Toys, and try to keep them in the same room in the beginning. They are facing trauma. You seem to have already written the things you will need.

When you get up the next morning, you will have seen them and have a superior idea of their clothing needs. You are on the right track…Take care, God bless you…And be prepared for three crying kids who will be hard to comfort. Ask the worker if she can bring a favorite thing from each child. Kind of like a security blanket for them.

Answer by mom2grls0204
Sleeping first – the 1 year old needs a crib, the 2 and 3 year old can use toddler beds.

Car seats – all of them can be in a face forward automobile seat now, in the back. I would get the 5 point harnass ones.

Clothes – can be hard because you need to really now weight. Also what how old are them in months. If the 1 year old is 12 months then you need 12 to 18 month clothes. the 2 year old get 2T clothes and the 3 year old 3T/4T

Eating at 2 and 3 they can eat what you do, they will need sippy cups for all three. The one year old might need gerber toddler food.

Toys – just go by the age on the box.

Good luck and God Bless you for doing this.

——————————————

Question by MoMoF3:
Why cannot my 4 year old daughter sleep?
I am a mother of three. I have a 6 year old, a 4 year old, and a 2 month old baby so sleep is very rare event in my life right now. I have been up all night myself because my infant has a cold and i have to take care of her, but for some reason my 4 year old has not been to sleep yet and its past eight and she is still wide awake playin with some Christmas toys just having the time of her life and this is not just this day this is all the time i try to stay up with her for comfort but sometimes i cannot hang and i catch a few zzzzzz’s but this is not safe. Has anyone dealt with this before? If so how did you handle it? And i’m open to advice as well.

——————————————

Answer by ms.cocoakiss
Just tell her she cannot do that.have a tiny authority because even though she doesn’t comprehend a lot she needs to know that she cannot just do what she wants to do. Try rocking her to sleep and if she fights it I would just let her know she cant do that by hitting her hand once but not too hard. If you do not want to hit her just have a firm voice telling her no it’s time to go to bed NOW!!but do not do it in a mean way just make sure you are firm and tell her that mommies really exhausted and wants To go to sleep but that she has to go to sleep first.I reeeeeeeally hope this helps

Answer by – bella -
Do you tell her to go to bed? By what you just wrote it doesnt seem like you do!

I am looking after my sisters five year old (she is staying with me for a few days). I have found that her routine has been muddled up a little, and she has consequently, been not sleeping. It’s 9.00 where I live. I was sick of being soft with her, I just grabbed her by the arm, (not angrily, just with authority.) and stated something like this: “Emma, it’s eight thirty. Past your bedtime. I have been fair and let you stay up later. I know we can have fun together, we can have lots of fun. It wont be as enjoyable if you are exhausted though. You need to do what I say. Stop playing with your toys, and go to bed. I will read you a story if you like, a few cuddles, etc.” When she complained I just said, “Emma, time for bed, NOW.” She kept resisting, I picked her up, not with anger, and took her to her room, and put her in her bed, then stated “It’s time to sleep. Do you want a story?”
“No!”
“Ok? Cuddle and kiss?”
“NO!”
“Okay, Emma. You need to go to sleep. If you leave this bed, just once, then we will NOT be going to the zoo. Goodnight. *blew kiss*”
She got out of bed straight away. “Emma, I know you want to go to the zoo, this is your last chance.” She got in bed. I walked around the corner, she thought I had gone downstairs, and she got up again. I went in and sat next to her bed. “Okay Emma. No zoo. We are going to have to do this the hard way.” I sat by her bed. (You could do this with your infant, or sit outside.) she could not move from her bed, and she finally fell asleep (:

Answer by Tiny ‘ole Me
All I can recommend is putting in place a very rigid nightime routine, my daughter needs very tiny sleep so I know what you are going through, and a lot of it was trial and error, but for us it is wash, dressed for bed, read a book and then we watch a video together, I lay in her room with her, and usually pretend to be asleep and she will go off too. and I know they state shouldn’t have tv before bed, but if we did not we would never get any sleep!

——————————————

He also has a toy with a sqeaker button, and this one cannot be submerged in water (I do not think). What should I use for it? Spraying it with Lysol probably is not safe, is it?

Answer by proudmum.2boys
don’t use anything more than dish soap. everything else is either too harsh or will not clean properly.

Answer by mominsd
You can spray it with vinegar, or a mixture of vinegar and water.

Answer by KM in PA
As long as it is only your baby putting the toys in his mouth and no other child then just wash with soap and water. When you wash your dishes wash his toys. Grant them to air dry, if he is not sick then just run under hot water and grant to air dry. If your truly need to disinfect them, then use 1 TB of clorox to 1 gallon of water, but they still need to be washed first and just dipped into this solution and air dry. I run a day care in my home and I only disinfect toys once a week and as busy as I am I do not wash the toys each day either and this past winter only one child out of 8 ended up on an antibiotic, 2 kids had the stomach flu, and 1 child had a nasty cold. Sometimes people wash and disinfect too much and kill all germs, even the good germs, so unless the toys are truly dirty I would just let them go.

Answer by emmy_nicole27
Im sure they would be okay but I would not begin spraying it on everything I would read through it and purchase the one that states safe to use on baby products.

Answer by adores christmas lights
I use hot water and sanitizers, known for thier germ killing properties since babies dont have much imminities formed yet. I scrub it, and rinse twice to remove all residue. All natural do clean but thier not made with alcohol, or bleach to kill germs.

Answer by arial39
i dont have any experience with the green works stuff, but the clorox anywhere spray is great, you can disinfect all that stuff that wont go in the dish washer and not have to worry, its even safe for high chair trays.

Question by bunnyluver:
safe baby toy ideas?????
for my health and social class, we have to make a baby toy. me and my friend are making a “touch and feel” toy for 6-12 month olds. so far we are putting these things on the toy (wwhich is a bear) : a crinkle paper arm, a mirror, taggies on one leg, a rattle in a leg, and we need something else for the other arm? i was thinking could sew tiny beads on to make a bumpy surface, but i dont know if this would be safe for a real baby?? …. what we are trying to do is make a toy which is educational for the baby, such as exploring new noises and feeling new materials, if the bead thing is not a good idea, can someone please give me some? thanks mmuchly (: xx
thankyou! lights are to complex considering its just a school assinment and we have to get our own materials and such, though i love the idea!… maybe i will just put bells inside to make the noise xxx

——————————————

Answer by kristi
Beads is not a good idea babies can eat an choke I would use maybe a rattle or something that lights up?

Answer by Miranda Marks
How about you pull the arm and it makes a noise or something like that.
Good luck on your assaignment.

Answer by Jeff King
You could make a mobile by using bright flickering lights (Christmas lights) on the top, maybe some small bears hanging down. Also, a rattle that has bright colors like red & yellow. This should help the baby learn their 5 senses. Good Luck!

Question by :
Trying to have a baby on a tight budget?
Is this wrong? Ok. So my boyfriend and I are getting married soon (yay!) and we want to try for a baby soon after. I work at an antique mall and he works at BW3′s, so we are not exactly rich. However, we both believe that all these THINGS that people insist babies need are mostly ridiculous and because of commercials. I mean, when my nephew was born my sister paid $ 150 for a bed set and stated it was a DEAL! You have got to be kidding! The boy never even slept in it once! Also, there are all of these toys that are supposed to instruct them things and walkers and bouncy seats and fancy childproofing equipment etc etc etc. I plan to be old school. When it comes down to it, a baby needs love, nourishment and safety. It will certainly be loved and safe with us. Also, I plan to breastfeed and when the baby moves on to baby food, I am not buying the costly mush by the jar packed with God knows what when I have a perfectly good food processor and a fridge full of healthy real food. I have a grandmother that is an astonishing quilter and she, I am sure will be more than happy to help me make a bed set for my tiny guy or girl. I do not think everything needs to match, I do not think you need an interior decorator for a nursery and I do not think an infant needs a new $ 30 outfit for each day of the week or his or her picture taken professionally each month. Because I will take photos with my own camera, accept hand-me-downs and make everything I can for my baby, will I be viewed as a bad mother? I know people that parent just slightly off the beaten track and are looked down upon by modern moms. Why is this? What is wrong with being old-fashioned? Cave people had healthy happy babies and I do not think I should be seen as a poor mother because my child doesn’t get the newest Power Wheels for Christmas or doesn’t have each single huge stroller automobile seat and gadget that you can find in stores. Am I wrong? Should I just wait until we have more money in a few years or possibly never?? We are already saving! Please help!

——————————————

Answer by Mozzie
You speak about a perfect world. Its not. What happens if the child get sick?

Answer by —————————
It’s not all the unnecessary accessories that make babies costly it’s the childcare or having to quit your job to take care of your baby. Childcare is easily $ 500 a month and up. I have seen it as high as a $ 1000 a month for full time. You also have to prepare for the worst, some women fully intend on breastfeeding then discover they are unable to, are you prepared for $ 50-$ 100 (depending on brand) a month in formula costs in case you cannot breastfeed?

But yes, about 90% of the gadgets in baby stores are a complete waste of money. All you need to raise a baby is a boob, diapers, a blanket and a couple outfits. I am a stay at home mom, breastfeed, use cloth diapers, get hand me downs and I do not spend any money on my baby other than health care. So yes it can be inexpensive.

Doesn’t matter if you have all the latest gadgets or fancy clothes, all that matters is that you take care of and love your child. Who cares what others think.

Answer by Julianna Barrett
lol check out craigslist. I am in your boat but, I am pregnant. Save your money*. Pick up more work. Begin getting the crib and stuff now!

——————————————

Answer by mommy2sam
It is fine for his skin to have toys in the tub just make sure they are childproof and age appropriate.

Answer by Ashley D
I’m sure they had be fine.If the company produces toys for newborns and toddlers I am sure they would figure out if they were safe or not.

Answer by single mom of four
Make sure you dry the toys after use or they will get mold, mildew, and bacteria and then will cause problems for your child.
