Answer by Noreen
Everyone you ask will have their favorite cloth diaper brand or type. Unfortunately, each baby/situation/budget is different and therefor the diaper that gets suggested to you might not work for you. Your ideal bet is to speak to someone (a Cloth Diaper Consultant) who is familiar with many different types of cloth diapers and speak about which diapers might be ideal for your baby. You will probably want to purchase several different brands/types to start, and then, when you find the system that you like best, purchase the rest of the diapers that you need.

Question by Donna C:
Is ammonia smell on cloth diapers hazardous for baby to breathe?
I’m having what I believe is a urine residue issue on our cloth diapers. As soon as the baby pees, it smells of ammonia. I am not entirely sure if this is due to urine residue not being washed away well, or if it’s detergent build up – but I am betting it’s a direct result of our he machine not using enough water :/

Anyway…Is this hazardous for him to breathe while I get this resolved? Thanks!

——————————————

Answer by Lilli
No, but it might literally burn his skin. Do not use the diapers again until you strip them.

Yes, this is nearly definitely detergent buildup. Be sure you use just a tiny, little bit of detergent in an HE machine. You can always wet a towel or two and throw it in your machine before you begin your laundry; this makes the machine use more water.

To strip your diapers, the easiest way is to wash with a couple tablespoons (absolutely no more!!) of plain blue Dawn, with a cup of bleach. Then run your rinse cycle until there are no more bubbles.

Question by IJAF:
If you use cloth diapers, does your baby wear a larger size because of bulk?
I guess it might depend somewhat on what type of cloth diapers you are using? Anyway, I am about to purchase some prefolds + covers, and also some pocket type diapers, and was curious about how much bulk there is going to be, like in a onesie. Will my baby need to wear a larger size, since I am guessing clothes aren’t usually cut to grant room for cloth diapers anymore?

——————————————

Answer by KS4E
If you are using prefolds and covers, it is most likely that your baby will need a slightly larger size. My son is 11 months and about 23 lbs, but we have pants in 18 months to 2T for him. I do not bother too often with jeans or anything like that but like stretchy cotton for his pants, which is so much easier to handle in regards to changing a baby. Even when my son is in pockets (OS BG) we need a slightly larger size. I think babies look so much cuter with all that fluff on their bottom!

Answer by Mrs.K
if your using cloth diapers have you heard of these?

http://www.gdiapers.com/

I use these and think they are fabulous and it takes half the damn time out of soaking and washing cloth nappies, plus its easier to manage with a child who squirms and doesn’t want to sit still and there are no pins.

Check it out you might find it more suitable to your needs.

Answer by lysistrata411
Yes, I am using AIOs and pocket diapers along with gdiapers occassionally. All of them usually have a tiny bit sticking out the top of my son’s pants unless he is in really stretchy pants or a pair that is a size bigger. I have heard this is normal. Also, you can think about just letting the baby be without pants in the summer each once and a while to show off the cloth diapers or get a wool shortie for cheap off of ebay or from a WAHM. They cover the diaper, are lightweight, and work as shorts.

——————————————

Question by tigermama4:
Fabric for cloth diapers for sensitive babies?
I want to make cloth diapers for preemies, what is the ideal fabric for the inner layer? I know some preemies can be really sensitive. I’d like to make AIO diapers, with PUL on the outer layer, probably hemp or microfiber in the middle (for the soaker), and I was thinking velour for the inside-but that doesn’t take the wetness away as well as suedecloth.
Any suggestions? Any cloth you REALLY like/dislike?

Answer by ten151x
Flannel

Answer by mystic_eye_cda
If you *can* get hemp fabric that has not been bleeched. Preferably organically grown and processed. Hemp has antibacterial property.

Otherwise try to find some organic cotton.

Answer by Hypermama
bamboo is really soft and has anti microbal properties, but i like diapers lined with microfleece because they keep wetness away from the skin.

Question by Stanley C:
Is it possible my infant is sweating too much inside his diapers?
I want to avoid the wastefulness of disposable diapers. But when I put my 3-week old into a cloth diaper, and then cover it with the tiny plastic pants-like cover, the next time I check him (maybe an hour later?) the whole area inside the diaper is drenched. (And not to be too graphic, but it doesn’t smell like pee.)

I’m wondering if it’s possible that the plastic cover is making him sweat inside the diaper? Has anyone ever came across this?

——————————————

Answer by Candy517
That happens w/ disposable diapers, too. My infant has ALOT of rolls (like the Michelin Man) and sweat gets down off in those rolls and it can get pretty fowl. Try using desitin or roll on powder – that should help with the smell and feel superior for baby, too.

Answer by Jenn M
Yeah it might be the plastic cover…there are some that you can get that are cloth on both the inside and out but there is a liner in the middle that is plastic. I cannot remember the name of them they used to have them at Babies R Us and they do work. I know my middle boy got sweaty whenever you would have ANYTHING on him at all and he is nearly 3 now and still the same way. I concur with the baby powder idea.

Answer by kd5bel
Yes, it can be sweat. you might want to try investing in natural cloth diapers with the rubber covers. The vynil that is made this day doesn’t breathe like the rubber ones, from years ago when I was a kid.

Cornstartch or talc will also help keep baby dry.

I just did a search for natural cloth diapers and found the website below.

——————————————

Question by yahoo ID 89523:
can’t get rid of ammonia with my babies cloth diapers!?
I thought it was the fact that he was sitting in pee over night that gave it time to turn to ammonia. ( he is day potty trained and we just started cloth at night 3 weeks ago ) Well I just put a diaper on him and he peed…A few minutes later I catch a strong whiff of ammonia.
It ALREADY smells really strong!
I’m gonna have to put a disposable on him again until we get this figured out.
I really want to figure out what I am doing wrong cause I am due in 5 weeks and wanted to cloth diaper this baby.
I’ve tried 3 different soaps ( purex, all, and arm and hammer) I am only using like a tbsp and running it through 3 cycles! ( no soap – soap – no soap)
I have a front load washer.
I also tried a small squirt of blue dawn and just water.
I even tried 1/8 cup bleach.
( I tried all of these things seperatly not together)

nothing is working and it’s ticking me off!
Someone please tell me how to fix this ammonia problem!
I ran them through 3 extra hot cycles plain water cycles ( back to back ) last week…there was no suds.
Still ammonia!

——————————————

Answer by atlas_junkie
Put a cup of white vinegar in the wash cycle. That should do it!

Answer by parental unit
heres how I do mine:

prewash cycle to rinse away any residue, wash cycle with a small amount of liquid soap ( I use 7th generation), 1/2 c of baking soda and 1/2 c of borax, 1 c vinegar in the rinse cycle, then a second rinse. I air dry my covers and dry diapers on high heat.

Answer by some chick
Most likely, it’s detergent residue.
Wash them in plain hot water (no soap) and keep washing them in hot water, until there are NO suds. (This could take 4 or 5 cycles.) You should be good to go after that.
Also, check your diapers as they are rinsing each time you wash them. If you see suds, run another rinse.
Front-loaders are great, but they make it harder to get diapers fully rinsed, especially if you are using pocket diapers.
And, finally, I like Charlie’s Soap. It rinses a tiny superior than anything else I have tried — but I still have to run an extra rinse or two, even though I only use a quarter the suggested amount.

——————————————

www.diaperpin.com

Answer by Ariana
I use cloth diapers for my daughter (18mos) and they work great. The key thing really is to change the baby often. Aside from that the are awesome!
I love them, they help prevent diaper rash, or at least keep it to a minimum…as for brands there’re many. We use a Diaper Service, the company provides me with the diapers, diaper covers, pale to put dirty diapers in, and is in charge of picking them up each week for washing, and then they drop the new pile of clean diapers. It has worked like wonder for us. Im in Canada so the brand name might not be the same, but my recommendation is to try and look for the same thing in your state!

Good Luck!

Answer by Katie S
I’ve been using Happy Heiny’s one size diapers and so far have found them to be great! (They also get mostly good reviews on the Diaper Pin website already mentioned)

They are pocket diapers and my husband and I have found them really simple to use and care for. They have no outer plastic liner to deal with so they go on just like a disposable diaper and washing is a breeze – you just stick them in the washing machine, no need for soaking, and then they just tumble dry.

Just be sure to use washing detergent that leaves no residues (this website has a whole list of how different detergents fare with diapers http://pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoices.htm#pocket%20diapers)

The diapers have a lovely soft fleece lining that the pee goes straight through and the absorbent terry insert soaks up the moisture, so the baby generally is not sitting in too much wetness. We have not found cloth diapers to be any more prone to blow-outs or leaks than the disposables we have used.

The Happy Heiny’s also come in a fantastic array of colours, making diaper changes more fun!!

They cost around $ 20 a diaper, so the initial outlay seems a lot. In the long run though you do save money over disposables. The older style cloth diapers are loads cheaper, so with wide array of choices for cloth diapers its all down to what you feel is reasonable and what style of diaper you feel will fit ideal with your family and lifestyle.

——————————————
——————————————

Answer by Mother of 2 Beautiful Peanuts
Yes, and I love them. I use them on my 8 and a half month old and have since about 2 months. They are a bit bulky and take longer to put on, but for the price, they are great. They wash well, and they are very absorbent. I have the one-size-fits-all and use the Rikkik wrap over top. This is their second baby and they still look great. I like the snaps, baby cannot pull them off and they do not stick together in the wash. I put them on her in the morning when she is still in her sleepers because they do not fit well under her clothes. You can purchase ones that are specific sizes, the Sandy’s diaper, I have a couple and they are less bulky than the one size diaper. I also love their swim diapers. You can also purchase liners for them if you need more absorbency.

And they are Canadian!!

Question by everybody should be happy:
what are the benefits for the baby using cloth diapers vs. disposable diapers?
i did not try cloth diaper coz i do not really know what are the benefits for my baby by using it.

——————————————

Answer by DAKOTAS MOMMY
The enviroment! But I think it’s quite nasty!

Answer by SMILE
none… people could state the enviorment but all the cloth diapers in the wash will **** the enviorment over in the end as it is

Answer by pwg4077
A baby is less prone to diaper rash when wearing cloth diapers because the skin breathes easier… and you HAVE to change when it gets wet, so urine doen’t sit on the sensitive skin. And it’s more environmentally friendly. And way more cost effective…saves LOADS of money. But they are nasty to have to wash…..

Is there a kind of cloth diaper that grows with the baby (so you do not have to purchase new each few months)?

——————————————

Answer by |*3/\/!5
yes, cloth adapts to babies and it adapts rapidly so just get a cloth rag and wrap it around your baby’s butt and it’ll be fine for the next 80 years, it even adapts to eat and drink poop and pee

Answer by HeyLovelies
I know you can purchase cloth diapers, and you just tie them on your baby so if your baby gets larger you just tie it looser until it cannot fit anymore… but trust me once you have your baby you are not going to want those… disgusting! and especially once your baby can begin eating food… then it’s worse.

Answer by akvdr
I would state at least four duzzen to begin if you run out you can always purchase more. It sure brings back a lot of memories I had my kids before throwaways came along. I would wash them each other day and sometimes hang them outside to dry they would smell so good after drying outside. Thanks for the memories of the times I had . Lots of luck you have made a good choice .
