Question by *jen*:
How do I get rid of my infants eye infection.?

When she went to her well check at 2 weeks i told her physician that she had an eye infection. And he stated to rub her tear duct and keep around her eye clean. Well this day her eye has been so goopy (yellow and green sticky eye boogers) this day what should i do and how can i get rid of it? She is 4 weeks old today.
no im not breastfeeding :(

Answer by lol…..
put a bit of breastmilk in her eye. Not formula, if you are not nursing just a clean washcloth will work, but breastmilk will cure it in a day or two.

EDITED:

hmmm, maybe, just maybe, if she is only four weeks, you still have a tiny bit of milk. You only need a drop or two…

If that doesn’t work you can ask your physician for a Rx, but a warm washcloth (make sure it’s super clean) and a tiny eye massage will work. Just put your finger at the corner of her eye, not in it, beside her nose, and massage there very gently for a few minutes several times a day.

Blocked eye ducts are very common in newborns. They nearly always cure themselves, it is not a large deal and does not bother her.

If it is bothering him it might be conjunctivitis. You might want to take him to the doctors.

FOUR MONTH BABY STILL HAS MUCUS IN EYES? http://birthpolicy.org/352/four-month-baby-still-has-mucus-in-eyes/ http://birthpolicy.org/352/four-month-baby-still-has-mucus-in-eyes/#comments Wed, 10 Nov 2010 18:48:05 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/352/four-month-baby-still-has-mucus-in-eyes/ Question by HeavenlySinging:
Four month baby still has mucus in eyes?

Ever since my baby was born she gets mucus in her eyes. It was really bad as a newborn and it has gotten superior but I still have to clean her eyes several times a day. We were prescribed drops when she was a newborn that we used a short while and we were told to massage under her eyes which we did for a short while too. Is it normal that she is still mucusy?

Yes- sounds like a blocked tear duct. Are you breastfeeding? If so express a SMALL amount of milk onto cotton wool and use this- my physician told me to do this with my son and his eyes cleared up within a couple of days! They can remain blocked for up to a year, just keep bathing with cooled, boiled water and/ or breast milk. They will unblock soon xx

HOW TO DEAL WITH BABIES EYE INFECTION? http://birthpolicy.org/312/how-to-deal-with-babies-eye-infection/ http://birthpolicy.org/312/how-to-deal-with-babies-eye-infection/#comments Wed, 03 Nov 2010 22:10:06 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/312/how-to-deal-with-babies-eye-infection/ Question by arianrhod:
How to deal with babies eye infection?

My tiny 17mth old has an eye infection I think (yellow gunge and crusty eyelashes in the morning) Been to doc he stated it should clear up but to go back if it gets worse. I am cleaning the eyes as ideal I can with cotton wool buds and sterile warm water – anything else you can recommend? We have not had this before.

Answer by PK211
Sounds like your child has pink eye. Just keep it as clean as you can and if it doesn’t clear up in a day or two I’d be back at the doctor…and make sure it is gunky when you go so he can get a good look.

I have a Shih tzu, she is 1 1/2 yrs old. Her eyes always seem to get yucky guck in them, is this common with?

this breed? My older male dog usually cleans them for her and she seems to like it. But it seems to be everyday. I put infant eye drops in her eyes but doesnt seem to help. What do you recommend I do? Also what are some common things I should be aware of w/ Shih tzu’s?
Thanks in Advance

Answer by Abby
Shih Tzu’s and eye troubles go hand in hand. Your first step needs to be to the vet. You vet needs to start analyzing your Shih’s eyes early on as it is likely they will be an ongoing problem. Your vet might be able to prescribe a mild medication that can help. Your second step would be to set up a meeting with a groomer or breeder to instruct you how to properly groom (clip) and clean the eyes. When you learn how to do this well it is not painful, but if you are not taught it can be very painful for you pet. Finally, you need to commit to cleaning her eyes once or twice a day. Your vet/groomer/breeder can instruct you how.

These three steps will save you a lot of time and trouble with her eyes in the future. It is fine that your other dog licks them, this is a natural sign of affection between dogs.

CAN I GIVE ANTIBIOTIC EYE DROPS TO BABY KITTENS? http://birthpolicy.org/32/can-i-give-antibiotic-eye-drops-to-baby-kittens/ http://birthpolicy.org/32/can-i-give-antibiotic-eye-drops-to-baby-kittens/#comments Fri, 20 Aug 2010 07:10:59 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/32/can-i-give-antibiotic-eye-drops-to-baby-kittens/ Question by Fhari Franco:
Can I give antibiotic eye drops to baby kittens?

Me and my Mom have rescued four baby kittens and their mom and they look around 1 week old and two of the babies have infected eyes one has a left eye infected and the other has a right eye infected we clean the babies eyes each day with some cottons balls wet and we remove the green gunky stuff the infected doesn’t go away so we would like to know if we can put antibiotics drops to baby kittens eyes.

——————————————

Answer by darcy_t2e
Don’t use human medicine on animals (especially baby animals) as these medicines are not made with animals in mind and might not work the same on them as on us. You are ideal bet (and the kittens) is to take them to a vet. If you cannot afford the vet or do not want to pay for it you can always ‘abandon’ them at the vet clinic. It’s not really abandoning them since you just found them and they aren’t really yours. The clinic will take care of the kittens and probably send them to your local animal shelter for adoption when they are healthy and ready to be separated from their mother.

I have a 3 mth old boxer and I cleaned his eyes with a baby wipe now one of his eyes seem to be red?

I am not sure if its infected or irratated. I am kinda of worried about his eyes. Should I take him to the vet?

——————————————

Answer by Charlie T.
Its possibly just irritated. If it doesn’t clear up by tomorrow, or it starts getting worse, take him to the vet.
Next time, use the wipes specificially for dogs you can get at the petstore!
