Question by Buffy:
Has anyone heard of wiping a newborn down with Olive Oil oppose to Bathing them in the first couple of weeks?

I am currently pregnant and my baby is due in January. I live in the Midwest and I am afraid of my newborn catching a cold due to bathing. I heard that you can wipe a baby down with Olive Oil oppose to bathing them. This is suppose to moisturize the skin and remove old skin while protecting the embilical cord. I am wondering if there is any truth to this or if this is an old wise tale???

Answer by Alyssa’s mommy
There are a few cultures who are obsessed with covering babies in oil. I have even had a woman tell me to shave my then 1 year old’s hair and cover her head in oil till her hair grew back in thicker… no thanks.

You can get a space heater to put in the lavatory so the air is nice and warm for your newborn if your are worried.

BABY BATHING? http://birthpolicy.org/341/baby-bathing/ http://birthpolicy.org/341/baby-bathing/#comments Wed, 10 Nov 2010 18:47:53 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/341/baby-bathing/ Question by :
Baby bathing?

My baby’s 2 months old and ever since she was born the M.I.L has been bathing her because I am affraid she might slip on me and because babies are just so frajile,i was just wondering if anyone out there as gone through this as me and if so at what age would you recomend for me to bathe my baby? Please answer.

Answer by tiny miss bump
Bath time is so much fun, you are missing out! (well my baby adores it anyway!) Seriously, they arent as fragile as you think, you will be fine, you just need a bit more confidence. Perhaps next time the MIL bathes her you could ask to maybe hold her or wash her, so that way you are helping, but someone else is there if anything happens, and just see how you go from there.
Dont worry too much, all parents are afraid of doing something that will injured the baby, but really, you should be fine

What should i do with the net to my babies bathtub after im done bathing her?

I usually leave the net connected to the bath tub and just sit the bath on the floor in her room, but i noticed that the water starts to give the net a mildew smell, so i was wondering what i can do with it? If anyone has had an infant tub were the nets supports newborn babies i would love your recommendations on what you do or did. I find myself washing it a lot but i want to know wat to do in between washings???!!!

Answer by moongoddess209
I always rinsed mine out with really really hot water when I was done using it. Then I would just hang in over the rack in the lavatory until it was dry. Never got a mildew smell. Maybe you just need to store it in an area with more airflow/ventilation?

WHAT ARE YOUR IDEAS ON BABIES BATHING/SLEEPING WITH YOU? http://birthpolicy.org/219/what-are-your-ideas-on-babies-bathingsleeping-with-you/ http://birthpolicy.org/219/what-are-your-ideas-on-babies-bathingsleeping-with-you/#comments Mon, 25 Oct 2010 23:01:33 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/219/what-are-your-ideas-on-babies-bathingsleeping-with-you/ Question by cynthiabonacasa:
What are your ideas on babies bathing/sleeping with you?

My husband and I have been married for 3 and a half years, and we now have a 3 month old baby boy, and we grant him to sleep in the bed with us (a king size bed) as well as bathe in the tub, when one of us does. My husbands family is having a complete fit over this! I sleptwith my parents and bathed with my mom, what are your views on this matter?
When it comes to the “unsafe” aspect, isnt it possible that a baby can roll over and suffocate in a bassinet or crib? When he is asleep next to me, when he snores, or even makes a peep in his sleep, I wake instantly, wouldnt you state that safety isnt a factor here? And I slept in my parents bed for years, off and on, and it made me ery comfortable with the relationship I have with them. When I was sick with cancer, I layed in bed with my mother, and my husband, it was merely a place to lay and be comfortable! Comments are appreciated, thanks so much!

INFANT BATHING? http://birthpolicy.org/143/infant-bathing/ http://birthpolicy.org/143/infant-bathing/#comments Wed, 22 Sep 2010 14:56:18 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/143/infant-bathing/ Question by sassycarmichael:
Infant Bathing?

My son is 8 1/2 weeks old and he adores the bath. However, after the bath is where I am having problems. He is fine up until I go to put lotion on him. I warm the lotion up in my hands, I use a heater fan to make sure he is warm (but not too warm). He screams bloody murder! I feel just terrible hearing him scream. Any recommendations to make after bath time easier?
I am putting lotion on him because he is blended and his skin looks ashy. I will try holding off until he has gotten warmed up after the bath!

——————————————

Answer by Precious
Don’t put the lotion on. He doesn’t need it and it can clog his pores. After his bath, change and dress him immediately and then put the lotion on any dry areas that you are concerned about. I never put lotion all over my baby.

newborn bathing?

Answer by iampatsajak
The baby has a fontanel. It’s a soft spot. It’s nothing to be alarmed about, but be sure to cradle the head instead of separating your fingers while holding it.

The brain is protected by a thick later of skin and other material. You did not cause any damage.
