Question by Marian O:
What can I do to ensure good oral hygiene for a baby who has started teething. Any products for mouth washing?

Answer by Dr. Katie
You want to begin cleaning your child’s teeth 2-3 x a day. Do not use fluoride containing toothpaste and purchase the special baby toothbrush. A lot of parents like to but their baby to sleep with a bottle. This can cause significant decay of your baby’s teeth.

WHEN DO I START ORAL HYGIENE FOR MY BABY? http://birthpolicy.org/240/when-do-i-start-oral-hygiene-for-my-baby/ http://birthpolicy.org/240/when-do-i-start-oral-hygiene-for-my-baby/#comments Fri, 29 Oct 2010 07:53:24 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/240/when-do-i-start-oral-hygiene-for-my-baby/ Question by C N:
When do I begin oral hygiene for my baby?

Do I need to worry about doing anything for her gums before she has teeth?

Nobody mentioned anything to me at the hospital about infant oral hygiene? :)
She is 6 weeks and breast fed.

Yep, that is correct…not until her first tooth comes in.

BABY ORAL HYGIENE…MUMS PLEASE HELP? http://birthpolicy.org/68/baby-oral-hygiene-mums-please-help/ http://birthpolicy.org/68/baby-oral-hygiene-mums-please-help/#comments Fri, 20 Aug 2010 08:35:17 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/68/baby-oral-hygiene-mums-please-help/ Question by d and a’s mommy:
baby oral hygiene…mums please help?

I have a few questions about oral hygiene in babies. Any assistance will be appreciated.

1. How do I clean my baby’s mouth?
2. What should I use (products)?
3. How often must I clean her mouth?
4. What can happen to her if I do not clean her mouth?

Thank you all in advance.

1. Get the Oral-B infant Stages toothbrushes. It’ll be difficult, because the baby likes to suck on the toothpaste rather than have the teeth brushed. I tend to open my daughter’s bottom lip with one finger, and then brush back and forth with the other hand. I brush just like I brush my own, but the bristles are very soft and shaped in a way that it fits around her gums.

2. Oral-B Baby Stages toothpaste. It does not contain saccarhin and fluoride, which is good. Flouride can be harmful to an infant if swallowed. It does not foam either, so it is perfectly safe to swallow. It is “practice” toothpaste, that works to clean their teeth and gums.

3. At least once or twice a day, perhaps morning and before bed are best. After each meal does not matter, as long as the teeth are being cleaned twice a day.

4. Cavities, tooth decay, bad breath, gingivitis, premature browning of the teeth, premature tooth loss.
