Question by Leah’s Mommy:
A few questions about baby’s first teeth?
My 7 month old has a tiny tiny white bump on her gums this morning so she finally got her first tooth! Yay!

1. How long after the first bottom tooth poked through did the second one come in? She has one on the bottom so far.

2. It’s literally a tiny white bump, but when can I brush it? I am a large stickler about oral hygiene. And if I do brush it, do I even need toothpaste? And do I do it twice a day?

Question by just me..:
At what age did you begin cleaning your baby’s mouth (or teeth)..and how?
How do I maintain oral hygiene for my baby.. she is 2 months old now.

God bless

——————————————

Answer by monkeytoes
I’d wipe her gums twice a day before she even got teeth. Now she has two teeth I use a “baby toothbrush” It’s a rubber thing with tiny bristles and I clean them twice a day. As far as I know you cannot use toothpaste until they are two years old. You can begin now with a clean washcloth, it’s a good habit to get into.

Edit: I am in Ireland and I cannot find a baby toothpaste anywhere!!

Answer by army_wife
My physician stated just to wipe my daughters gums with a wet wash cloth everyday. When she gets teeth they have tiny things that go over your finger with tiny bristles. You just put some tooth and gum cleaner on it and wipe her teeth and gums.

Answer by Vr
We always cleaned his mouth. We used a wet washcloth when he was a newborn, then once he started teething (around 2 months) we used a finger tip brush, then when his teeth came through (4 months) we used a toddler brush. All without toothpaste until he was 6-8 months from then on we used toddler toothpaste with a toddler toothbrush.

——————————————

Question by Alison:
Why is it that so many people on here give the advice that toddlers do not need to brush their teeth?
I have read post after post where people are are telling moms or caregivers not to worry about brushing their children teeth until they are 3-4 years old!! To me that is just CRAZY! Baby teeth should be taken care of too- so what if they are replaced later with permanent teeth! Who wants their children teeth to rot?? Plus instruct them young about good oral hygiene.

I just hate to think that there are parents out there who do not brush their children teeth! I would feel so guilty taking care of mine and not taking care of my helpless toddler’s teeth!

What a shame!
It’s mostly on questions where a parent is having a difficult time getting the kid to cooperate when people jump on the ‘they do not need them brushed’ or ‘they are too young’ band wagon.

I like to help out on those questions because my daughter was very difficult when it came to teeth brushing too. But she adores it now.

It just surprises me at some of the responses.

——————————————

Answer by Eyes of Green
baby teeth rotting is not good, my godson had his pulled at 3 and it took a very very long time for his permanent teeth to grow in and because he did not have teeth for so long he has a speech problem

Answer by miss dont jnow
not everyone i have had my children to the dentist since they whre babies just to maintain good oral hygiene and also n 2 b scard o dentists that y toothpaste designd for children from 6 mths old n just 3/4 yr olds wit planet they cum fae

Answer by vanessa
because they are not dentists physicians or in the medical field you are asking laypeople on yahoo instead of a professional makes sense doesnt it now call a dentist please.

——————————————

Question by nixodian:
is it alright to let a 11 month old baby bottle feed herself to sleep, in her crib, with formula milk?
the reason l ask is concern for her oral hygiene. She has sprouted two bottom front baby teeth and 2 upper ones are sprouting now. The milk formula does contain sugar l think.

l will begin to clean her teeth with a clean gauze soon (any video sites showing you how to use it to clean baby’s teeth would be great) she nearly always falls asleep drinking the formula milk herself.
Lastly, when should a baby toothbrush be introduced and l assume no toothpaste is used?

thanks in advance

Answer by samy
Make sure her head is up right and YOU HAVE to WATCH until she finish it.

Answer by jlb
Babies shouldn’t take a bottle to sleep in a crib. Our pediatrician beat that into my head and we do not even bottle feed.

You can clean your baby’s teeth with a damp washcloth or a toothbrush and water. Just brush them like you would your own teeth.

Answer by magikal
Definitely not a good idea. Her teeth are going to rot and she is old enough that she shouldn’t be dependent on anything to help her fall asleep.

Answer by ILoveLinds
Gum bleeding and mouth ulcers are a common part of pregnancy, the only thing you can do is keep your mouth clean, it wont harm the baby, but if its getting to much for you maybe you can speak to your doctor.

Answer by Dr. Katie
You want to begin cleaning your child’s teeth 2-3 x a day. Do not use fluoride containing toothpaste and purchase the special baby toothbrush. A lot of parents like to but their baby to sleep with a bottle. This can cause significant decay of your baby’s teeth.

I have a few questions about oral hygiene in babies. Any assistance will be appreciated.

1. How do I clean my baby’s mouth?
2. What should I use (products)?
3. How often must I clean her mouth?
4. What can happen to her if I do not clean her mouth?

Thank you all in advance.

——————————————

Answer by annas_baby_sis
1. Get the Oral-B infant Stages toothbrushes. It’ll be difficult, because the baby likes to suck on the toothpaste rather than have the teeth brushed. I tend to open my daughter’s bottom lip with one finger, and then brush back and forth with the other hand. I brush just like I brush my own, but the bristles are very soft and shaped in a way that it fits around her gums.

2. Oral-B Baby Stages toothpaste. It does not contain saccarhin and fluoride, which is good. Flouride can be harmful to an infant if swallowed. It does not foam either, so it is perfectly safe to swallow. It is “practice” toothpaste, that works to clean their teeth and gums.

3. At least once or twice a day, perhaps morning and before bed are best. After each meal does not matter, as long as the teeth are being cleaned twice a day.

4. Cavities, tooth decay, bad breath, gingivitis, premature browning of the teeth, premature tooth loss.

——————————————
