Question by ☯ Keeper of the Universe ♱:
My baby was positive for baby coombs (jaundice) after born, can the levels increase after having decreased?

I was not sure if there might be the possibility that the levels of antibodies that they test could increase after decreasing on their own. I want to know and be positive that the doctor’s choice is the right one. Because the levels decreased so much, they determined that the baby doesn’t need additional monitoring/treatment. I wanted to feel more reassured that there is not the possibility that the jaundice can increase in the baby’s blood.

The bilirubin levels tend to increase during the first 4 days and peak around day 4 or 5 after birth, then come down. It is considered harmless so long as the bilirubin level is under 10 and potentially harmful if over 14 for a prolonged period of time. If it has started coming down, it is extremely unlikely it would begin going back up. If it is past day five and the level is already below 10 and has been decreasing, I would not worry about it anymore. You can always monitor your baby by checking the whites of his eyes and his skin color. If the eyes become yellow or the baby looses his appetite and becomes very lethargic, ask the physician to check it again. Breastfeeding ensures frequent poops which will help the baby clear the excess bilirubin from his system and sunlight helps his liver function. If you do those two things it will continue to go down swiftly on its own.

What causes yellow jaundice in babies or in pregnancy?

Is it true that oranges causes yellow jaundice in babies or in pregnancy?

——————————————

Answer by Aphrodite
no, its caused from billiruben levels getting too high in their blood.
eating orange fruits and veggies can cause you to turn yellow, but its not jaundice, its just from eatin those coloured foods too much.
True jaundice you will be able to see in the whites of the eye. if the whites of the eyes seem yellow then jaundice is probably to blame. this does need medical attention to be sure that the levels arent too high, as this can cause brain damage.

BILLIRUBIN LEVELS IN JAUNDICE INFANT? http://birthpolicy.org/285/billirubin-levels-in-jaundice-infant/ http://birthpolicy.org/285/billirubin-levels-in-jaundice-infant/#comments Fri, 29 Oct 2010 07:54:24 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/285/billirubin-levels-in-jaundice-infant/ Question by Aiden Charle’s Mommy:
billirubin levels in jaundice infant?

I have a baby boy in the NICU. He was born at 34 weeks and 6 days. This day is day 5 in the NICU and he has been under the phototherapy light since yesterday morning for his jaundice. His levels were a tiny high and the doc stated if they go over 13 he would be put under the light. Yesterday morning they went up to 14. This morning they were back down to 12 and I am wondering if any one has had experience with this to when they will turn off the lights since its under 13 again. Its seems impossible to speak to a physician in the NICU and the nurses wont state much. I am so anxious to bring my baby boy home and could use a tiny hope that he might be off the light soon and home tmrw finally. Anyone know the levels to be taken off the light?
Thanks, I am rooming in at the hospital since it is for the most part a short term stay. I ask the nurses tons of questions but they state only the physician can only answer those and the physicians are never there. They make a swift round and go on to the next hospital. I asked the nurse to call my room next time he is there so hopefully I will be able to catch him to ask him questions.

Answer by Simon is 11months
well my son was born at 37 weeks and he lad to go under it for a few hrs after he was born because of jaundice. thankfully he only had to stay an extra day but that was actually to get him to keep his temp up. you really have to ask them questions or else they dont state much. go in and ask them and what is going on with your tiny one medically and what he has to accomplish to come home. my guess is they will state something about the jaundice, state he has to hold his temp up and has to be able to eat well. and i dont know how much your tiny guy wieghed or what your hospitals stipulations are but i do know a lot of them want them to make it to 5lbs. but you really should go in and ask them what his stipulations are for coming home. they have to tell you

HOW DOES PHOTOTHERAPY CURES JAUNDICE FOR NEWBORN BABIES? http://birthpolicy.org/199/how-does-phototherapy-cures-jaundice-for-newborn-babies/ http://birthpolicy.org/199/how-does-phototherapy-cures-jaundice-for-newborn-babies/#comments Sun, 17 Oct 2010 16:24:17 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/199/how-does-phototherapy-cures-jaundice-for-newborn-babies/ Question by shyam29june:
How does phototherapy cures jaundice for newborn babies?

In newborn babies, Jaundice appears when bilirubin builds up faster than a newborn’s liver can break it down and pass it from the body. Reasons for this include:

– A newborn baby’s still-developing liver might not yet be able to remove sufficient bilirubin from the blood.

- More bilirubin is being made than the infant’s liver can handle.

- Too massive an amount of bilirubin is reabsorbed from the intestines before the baby gets rid of it in the stool.

Now the question is, why phototherapy is precribed for jaundice. How does phototherapy helps janudice curing?

It helps break down the bilirubin

If I had jaundice as an infant, does that mean my liver is weak now?

I’m nearly 21 now and have been pretty much in general good health my entire life.

——————————————

Answer by peabody xyz
depending on the cause of jaundice.
some infants get physiological jaundice which is due to their liver being immature at the time of birth.
it is NOT a prelude of things to come and does not mean u will be sick later in life or that ur liver is weak, so relax.
just make sure u dont become an alcoholic and practice safe sex lest u get hepaitits b or c.
