Jaundice in Newborn
WHAT DO THEY DO FOR BABIES WITH HIGH LEVELS OF JAUNDICE WHEN THE LIGHTS CLEARLY AREN’T WORKING?
Jan 27th
Question by :
What do they do for babies with high levels of Jaundice when the lights clearly aren’t working?
My nephew was born three days ago. When he was 2 days old (yesterday) They saw he was starting to become jaundice. So they put him under bright lights. They took a blood sample and his level for jaundice was 15.7 so they put him under the lights again. This morning they took another sample and his levels have not chanced. They still are 15.7. What else would they do if the lights aren’t working? What is the normal level for a baby to be okay to leave the hospital with jaundice?

WHY DO INFANTS BREAK DOWN SO MANY RED BLOOD CELLS THAT IT CAUSES JAUNDICE?
Oct 2nd
Question by Sara:
Why do infants break down so many red blood cells that it causes jaundice?
The condition known as jaundice is a result of a build-up of bilirubin and is usually a sign of liver malfunction. Newborn human infants often go through a period of fetal jaundice in which they turn yellow. This usually reflects not a liver malfunction, but rather the destruction of huge numbers of red blood cells. Why would newborns be cashing in so many red blood cells?

INFANT SLEEPING TOO MUCH? JAUNDICE?
Feb 11th
Question by chevy_grl_2005:
Infant sleeping too much? Jaundice?
My daughter is a week old and we just got back from the hospital because she had to be readmitted due to jaundice. She had to stay in the hospital for 2 nights under blue lights and then we got to come home yesterday afternoon.
The Dr. said to call if the baby is “lethargic” well, she’s been asleep all day and I have to wake her to feed her… Is that lethargic? I do not think you’re supposed to have to wake a 1 week old to feed, I think she’s supposed to wake up on her own. She doesn’t even wake up to loud sudden noises. I rub her cheek to get her to eat and she wakes up for about 2 minutes and then off to sleep again! Should I be worried or do all newborns sleep all day?

MY BABY WAS POSITIVE FOR BABY COOMBS (JAUNDICE) AFTER BORN, CAN THE LEVELS INCREASE AFTER HAVING DECREASED?
Dec 15th
Question by ☯ Keeper of the Universe ♱:
My baby was positive for baby coombs (jaundice) after born, can the levels increase after having decreased?
I was not sure if there might be the possibility that the levels of antibodies that they test could increase after decreasing on their own. I want to know and be positive that the doctor’s choice is the right one. Because the levels decreased so much, they determined that the baby doesn’t need additional monitoring/treatment. I wanted to feel more reassured that there is not the possibility that the jaundice can increase in the baby’s blood.
