Question by pumpkinpie:
How do you get rid of hiccups in an infant?

My 4 month old baby girl gets hiccups constantly. Is there any safe way to help her get rid of them?
snoppylollysuchi – her Papi is Puerto Rican and constantly does that trick with the string. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to get rid of them any faster.

You sell it and get a new one. This one is obviously defective.

Baby hiccups?

My 2 week old baby girl has the hiccups all of the time. They come at least 4-5 times a day and all at random times. I might be able to justify them if they just showed up after feedings but they don’t. Is this commom? Does anybody elses baby hiccup a lot?

Answer by Gracee’s Mommy

WHEN DO INFANT HICCUPS BECOME A CAUSE FOR CONCERN? http://birthpolicy.org/275/when-do-infant-hiccups-become-a-cause-for-concern/ http://birthpolicy.org/275/when-do-infant-hiccups-become-a-cause-for-concern/#comments Fri, 29 Oct 2010 07:54:10 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/275/when-do-infant-hiccups-become-a-cause-for-concern/ Question by Brooke:
When do infant hiccups become a cause for concern?

Most people state that hiccups in babies are absolutely normal. My question is when do hiccups become a cause for concern? I have read that excessive hiccups in infants can be a sign of a serious medical issue. I am freaking out because my son gets them all the time! Last night, for example, he had them 5 times in a 3 or 4 hour period. That seems excessive to me. Comments?

Answer by Lili
My daughter gets them about five times a day too… since before she was even born. My physician told me it was not anything to worry about. Her aunt was the same way when she was younger(and sometimes still is) and she turned out just fine.
If they are really violent and seem to bother him a lot then I would call his pediatrician.

How often does your baby get hiccups? Any thing else weird going on with your baby: frequent spitting up? crying for no reason? How old is your baby?

Her getting hiccups might mean something else then just hiccups. My baby got hiccups each time i layed her on her back. She just had to cry them out unless she would take a bottle. Crying or eating got rid of them. In the end she had the hiccups because of GERD/acid reflux. other symptoms of acid reflux are: Frequent spitting up or vomiting, Irritability when feeding, Refusing food or eating only small amounts, Sudden or constant crying, Arching the back while feeding, “Wet” burps, Frequent hiccups, Frequent coughing, Poor sleep habits with frequent waking, Bad breath. My baby had all of these symptoms except bad breath and she also could not turn her head to the right at all. If you suspect she might have this speak to her PED and think about seeing a chiropractor for a subluxation.

If she has only the hiccups i can only recommend letting her cry or feeding her.

Newborns are not supposed to have water, I would consult your babies PED about it.

I just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl on Wednesday. Whether she feeds from the breast or bottle, she gets the hiccups after each single feeding. Is this normal? Is there anything we can do for her?

How do you deal with a 3 week old babies hiccups?

My new born gets hiccups several times per day. The pediatrician states its normal. I tried giving him water but he will not even take it. Besides the literature indicates that unless they experience dehydration babies nearly never need/drink water.

scare it and the hiccups will go away
