THE AMOUNT OF WEIGHT PREGNANT MOTHERS GAIN CAN AFFECT IF THE BABY IS OVERWEIGHT AS A TODDLER??
Oct 19th
Question by sd03bc06:
The amount of weight pregnant moms gain can affect if the baby is overweight as a toddler??
I usually skim through the news headlines each day and I came across this story today.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070402/ap_on_he_me/diet_pregnancy_weight;_ylt=ApohxKNPkUKIfEyMXSgxIDDMWM0F
(hopefully the link works if not it’s about the amount of weight a pregnant mom gains affects weither or not the child will be overweight as a toddler. The study says moms should gain at the low side of the suggested amount of weight.)
I really feel as a society we over analize everything way to much. How do we know that the children are just not eating healthy. Personally I gained 60+ pounds with my first child and he is a very healthly 3yr old. Even though he has always measured in the 95% for both height and weight he is not overweight. I personally need a lot more proof before I will believe anything this study says. What are your thoughts?

CAN YOU PROVIDE A LINK TO AN ARTICLE ABOUT BABY/TODDLER NUTRITION?
Aug 9th
Question by jen:
Can you provide a link to an article about baby/toddler nutrition?
My daughter’s father and I disagree on her diet. I think she really only needs healthy foods and he agrees, but he was raised eating mostly unhealthy foods, which is what his family could afford. I want articles to show him the importance of healthy eating, good food choices for a one-year old, etc. Any tips? Thank you!
He concurs that it should be healthy. We disagree on what is healthy.
As one example, he ordered her a fruit cup when he was bringing home food. When he opened it, it was fruit cocktail (the fruit in sugary syrup) so I did not want her to have it and he got annoyed like “what’s the big deal?” It is difficult to brush her teeth well and I do not want her having tons of extra sugar.
OMG. Now he just called and said he just fed her oodles of noodles! “I thought since it was noodles it was not bad.” UGH.

MY TODDLERS WEIGHT GAIN OR LACK THERE OF, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Mar 20th
Question by Its Me:
My toddlers weight gain or lack there of, what should I do?
My daughter was and still is a breastfed baby, when she was 6 months old, her physician noted that her weight was “abnormal”, she weighed 11 pounds, I really didnt think anything of it because she didnt appear too thin, he told me to add butter to her cereal to try and get her to gain, but she REFUSED to intake anything but breastmilk directly from the breast. At her one year check up I had a different physician and he didnt even blink at her weight, in fact he made it a point to tell me what a good job I had done with my 2 young children only a year apart in age, but then I was forced to switch physicians yet again due to insurance reasons, and the new doc was extremely concerned with her weight, she was only 19 pounds and wasnt yet 2 years old, I was told yet again to try to add calories to her diet, but I couldnt force her to eat or drink anything she didnt want, not only was I discouraged, I was scared to death that people were gonna think I was starving her, then her follow up appt. she gained nothing, but they said she was in the normal height range so maybe what she was eating was going towards her height and not weight, now she has turned 2 and I am really afraid to take her to the doctor, they told me they want to do invasive testing to find out why she gains so little weight, I do not want that for her, she is really smart and healthy, she eats when she is hungry and I have ALWAYS made sure food and snacks are available at any given time, I literally lay them within her reach, and she eats them when she wants, I know she is not as big as other 2 year olds, but she does eat, she nurses, and she grows, she has a smaller waist than some, but her shirts are normal size, she wears 18 mos pants and 24 mos tops, should I force her to eat fattening foods, or should I accept her gradual growth as normal?
Just so everyone knows, she DOES NOT only breastfeed, I feed her 3 solid meals a day, grant snacks at anytime in between, but she still nurses, and I comprehend that at 2 she should be done with breastfeeding, I still grant it because I know breastmilk has just as many health benefits the 2nd year as the 1st, but she totally does not ONLY breastfeed, she eats solid foods, and chooses to nurse because I assume she enjoys it.

MY 1 YEAR OLD SON NEVER GETS FULL…?
Jan 8th
Question by Amanda:
My 1 year old son never gets full…?
He is quite over-weight.. 28.6 lbs and 29 inches tall. Maybe 30 inches now.
Anyways.. He is not a picky eater, he will eat literally anything, even if he doesn’t like it and makes faces. I have never seen him quit drinking a sippy cup or bottle before it was gone and as long as there is food in front of him, he will eat it. He seems like he never gets full. I am worried there might be a problem. He had acid reflux as a baby, I am wondering if he still does or if that contributed to this. Is it normal for toddlers to eat and eat or should I control it now? I remember being told “If he’s hungry, let him eat.” I do not want him to be over-weight his whole life because of me. He eats healthy foods. 100% whole wheat bread, fruits, vegetables, non-fat cheese, etc. We are on a healthy diet, minus his whole milk. Since being on milk, he had gained 2 more lbs. He runs around like a mad man, too and still is not stopping the weight gain.. Any advice would be wonderful. Not sure if this is pediatrician worthy or not.
I do give him juice, no sugar added and mix it with mostly with water. He will drink water from a bottle, but refuses to drink plain water from a sippy cup and we’re trying to get off the bottle.

WANT ANOTHER BABY, BUT SPOUSE DOESN’T, HAD 26 WEEK PREEMIE AND I’M A VEGAN!?
Jan 5th
Question by Sarah:
Want another baby, but spouse doesn’t, had 26 week preemie and I am a vegan!?
My spouse and I have been together for over 4 years, we had a baby boy 3 1/2 years ago, he was born a preemie and spent 4 months in the hospital. He had many complications, breathing tubes, PDA clip, intestine problems, and almost died in the hospital. He is a healthy toddler now with no problems, so I am wanting another baby badly, but I am also scared that I might have another preemie and have to go through the same things. My old OBGYN told me there are drugs I could take so my chances are low on having another preemie, but I do not want to take anything that may harm my body in the long run. The reason I had a preemie is because I had had an abortion (Please do not judge me, I was addicted to cocaine and alcohol at the time) I was absolutely clean when I got pregnant with my son, and he was planned, so I did everything to have a safe pregnancy. I have been off drugs for over 5 years and I only drink once or twice a year, like one or two drinks max. I am in a very stable relationship and we own a home together so it’s not like I can get up and leave if he doesn’t want to give me another child. I dream about having another child and asked my spouse, but he’s afraid of having another preemie and what we went through. He is also worried that this is not the right time to bring a child in this world with the whole Obama Socialism stuff going on
So I am stuck, I want a sibling for my son and he is against it. I love him and would never leave him over this, so I am really just looking for your views and is it possible to have a healthy pregnancy. There’s also another part to this, I have began a Vegan diet as of Feb of this year, so is it safe to be pregnant on a vegan based diet?
We are engaged at the moment, I just want to get married in Canada and trying to get both our families to get together is hard, because of race issues, he’s Muslim and I am American.
nothingconstant: Okay let me rephrase it, his family is Muslim and I am White and do not follow that religion, we want to get married in Montreal, Canada because that is where my spouse was born and it’s beautiful!
Professional Peon: I thought about adoption, but they do background checks and mine is not squeaky clean, I am not married, and my fiance is not an American citizen. I am very worried about having a preemie, but I also missed out on a lot of stuff when my son was born, like I wanted to breastfeed. That may not be important to some people, but it was and I would someday want another child to experience stuff like that, am I being selfish?

HOW TO GO ABOUT GETTING MY TODDLER EVALUATED?
Oct 30th
Question by Happy Little Trees:
How to go about getting my toddler evaluated?
Gosh, where to start..
Basically, my toddler son, who is two and a half, has problems that I just want to get evaluated. Emotional problems, mostly. I have brought these problems up several times to his pediatrician, but the conversation never seems to get anywhere and the physician tells me each time that my son is “probably fine” and that if he had real problems, it would be obvious at his visits. The thing is, my son has never shown his true self at doctor’s visits..he usually just gets in my lap and is very quiet. At home, a different story.
I am inclined to think he is not Autistic as he really does not show any signs that match that. He is very communicative in his own way, has always made eye contact and basically does not seem to exhibit symptoms that make me think of Autism, even though I could be wrong. However, after reading up, I find that he has exhibited quite a few symptoms of Sensory Processing Disorder. He was born 6 weeks premature and I found that that is not uncommon in babies that were born preemie. He was speech delayed for a while, even though it was obvious he understood everything we were saying. Now he is speaking and we recently discovered he can read..he knows at least 60 words by reading them, and can sound out words on his own. So I stopped worrying about that since he blossomed. But he was tantrums and issues that are hard to describe. I know he is a toddler and toddlers have tantrums..but his are out of control. For instance, on our nightly walk, let’s say we are walking straight down a street and he indicates we should turn left instead. If I do not do what he is asking, he has a very loud meltdown that is really over the top. He screams and sounds like a child with deep problems and will not stop literally for 15-20 minutes until he has wound himself down. Then he is back to his sweet self. Another example, is that let’s say his father promises him ice cream (which is rare since I have my son on a very healthy diet and junk food is mostly forbidden..)..well my son will repeat the words “Ice Cream Ice Cream Ice Cream Ice Cream Ice Cream” over and over for even a half an hour, meanwhile working himself up to a huge tantrum. He becomes inconsolable. It may sound like nothing, but it is draining me. When he is not having his problems, he is a very sweet kid, very good with animals, always busy playing. But it has gotten to the point where it is hard to take him even to the store. People glare at me and must think I have no control of him. But I can’t stop it. I have tried everything I can think of to no avail.
Other symptoms are his problems with eating..he was very late in being able to manipulate his spoon and fork and cup, he often chokes on what he is eating. He also has a problem with phobias, particularly spiders and bugs.
Sorry for the huge story, but I am at a loss where to start. I would like to get him evaluated, but who do I call? I do not feel that my pediatrician is being helpful. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks everyone for your answers..I feel superior knowing I am not alone in this!
