Flat Head Syndrome in Baby
FLAT HEAD SYNDROME….I AM WORRIED PLEASE HELP?
Apr 29th
Question by nerdy:
flat head syndrome….I am worried please help?
My baby is a premie (31 weaker) I have been noticing that her head is becoming flat from back. I have been very worried about this issue , took her to two different physicians both of them said that it will get superior with time and to use pillow having hole in the middle . Well I have been using that for quite some time now. One dr said that because she is a premie that is why it is the way it is.
What can I do ? I put her in different sleep positions but I feel that her head should be rounder.

PLAGIOCEPHALY (FLAT HEAD SYNDROME)?
Mar 16th
Question by New Mom:
Plagiocephaly (Flat Head Syndrome)?
Just wondering if there are any parents out there with experience with plagiocephaly? My baby boy was born in April and due to the way he was positioned in the birth canal, came out with a fairly odd shaped head. The physician assured me this would resolve on its own; however, due to his great sleeping habits (12 hours through the night) he now has a very definite flat spot on the back of his head.
His face is totally symmetrical (and cute IMHO) as are his ears. We were referred to a physiotherapist when he was three months old, and she’s been out to visit us twice so far and given us some great tips on how to help him develop his arms, chest and neck muscles in order to remain off the back of his head as much as possible when awake.
At his five-month well-baby check-up today, our physician analyzed him and noted that his head is growing quite nicely (head circumference is in the 75th percentile), but that the flat spot still has not resolved. As he is not yet sitting up on his own, she suggested we wait until he’s eight months old, and then if the situation has not resolved or improved, to have him fitted for a helmet in order to help round out the back of his head, and ensure that his face and ears remain symmetrical.
I’m completely ok with going down the helmet route, but I guess a small part of me is worried that other people will look at him and wonder if there is something “wrong” with him. It’s stupid of me to let something like this bother me, and I know that I should listen to my physician and take her advice. I want to be able to say to him when he’s older that I did totally everything I could to help him. I have been assured by multiple physicians and a specialist (after diagnostic testing) that this is simply a cosmetic issue, and will NOT impact him neurologically. Thank goodness for that. I guess I should just look at this as similar to getting braces as a child.
Any words of wisdom? Any parents out there that did have their child fitted for a helmet and were glad they did?

MY BABIES HAVE FLAT HEADS – CAN THEY SLEEP ON THEIR TUMMIES?
Feb 1st
Question by :
My babies have flat heads – can they sleep on their tummies?
My twins are 5 1/2 months old now and they both have flat head syndrome. They are in a critical stage where if it gets a little bit better, we do not have to worry – but if it gets worse, they both will need helmets. I keep them off of their heads all day but I feel like I am trying in vain because they sleep on their backs at night for about 10-11 hours. My husband and I have tried sleep positioners but our babies are already old enough to scoot off of them. So, my question is when can I put them on their tummies at night or do I have any other options?

FLAT HEAD SYNDROME? AT WHAT AGE IS THIS DIAGNOSED AND HOW DO YOU KNOW FOR SURE IF YOUR BABY HAS IT?
Nov 4th
Question by lysistrata411:
Flat head syndrome? At what age is this diagnosed and how do you know for sure if your baby has it?
My son is just now 5 months old and has a flat spot on the back of his head. Since someone posted something about flat head sydrome the other day I am obsessed with this spot! It is on the back of his head, but higher up and goes across the back. It is somewhat noticeable and you can definitely feel it. When is the flatness supposed to even out normally for babies? Should I be concerned or is this normal for this age?
Turn him how? I mean, we do tummy time, but he will not stay like that for long and I can’t really put him on his side and anticipate him to stay that way.

MY 3 MONTHS OLD BABY’S FLAT HEAD (ON THE BACK)?
Sep 21st
Question by Zoe:
My 3 months old baby’s flat head (on the back)?
My baby is a week to 3 months, as my first child, I do not know about flat head syndrome , I thought was good to leave everything nature. Recently I noticed his back head is so flat (when he’s born, he has this perfect head shape), I started to realise it’s a problem and I felt so guilty about it. I have started to have a lot of holding/tummy time when he is awake and side sleeps (supervised!). My concerns are 1)is it too late?2)will the flat area round up again?3)how long it takes to round up? 4)I heard when the child is able to turn while sleeping, it will correct itself, correct?
Any of you have any good tips/experience, I am really appreciated your helps.

WORRIED MOMMY……………….?
Aug 8th
Question by *Lilah Bear’s Mama*:
Worried mommy……………….?
Lilah is 6.5 months old and for a while now she’s been sleeping on her tummy. Just recently I have noticed she is sleeping with her head facing straight down in the mattress. It’s not always that way, sometimes it’s to the side which doesn’t worry me as much, but personally I hate that she sleeps on her tummy at all. She goes to bed around 6-7:30 and I am usually up until around 12am or so.
“Rebreathing of exhaled air is one proposed mechanism for the increased risk for sudden infant death syndrome among prone sleeping infants.”
She sleeps in a pack n’ play right next to my bed and I sit on my bed and play on the comp usually for the main part of the night. I keep turning her over on her side but without fail she will roll right back onto her tummy. It’s driving me nuts! I am afraid of her rebreathing her own air (exhaled breaths) which can contribute to SIDS. (carbon dioxide poisoning) She does move around a lot in her sleep so she’s not always sleeping this way…just sometimes. And of course she can lift her head up etc., etc. It just still scares the crap out of me. One morning I woke up and she was still asleep (which is NEVER the case, she always wakes me up) and she had her face straight flat into the mattress and I FREAKED OUT. I do not think superman could have picked her up any faster! I think my heart skipped about 10 beats I swear.
So mommies, does your baby ever do this?
dagrlnxt..: Hah..Yes I am a first time 28 yr. old mommy…with MAJOR anxiety that I am well aware of – I just can’t help it! Honestly, I think if it were my 10th kid I would still worry! But thanks so much for your advice and to everyone else as well!
Thanks to all of you who recommended a sleep postioner, I actually used one with her when she was born, but b/c she is SOO squirmy when she sleeps, she outgrew it by 1.5 months…=( She “scootches” right out of it. (I am hoping that is not just a slang Texan word lol)
Draqoni: Interesting – thanks for the link.

BABY ON BACK OR SIDE?
May 12th
Question by JJ:
baby on back or side?
In NZ (where I live) the Ministry of Health advocates babies sleep on their back ONLY to help prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome -cot death) However I see so many babies/toddlers these days with funny looking flat heads. ‘They’ say to get around this to alternate babies head from side to side while on back but I have still noticed that babies heads still end up with a flat spot.
Yesterday I bought a wedge thingy which you use to prop your baby on its side so it can sleep safely without rolling onto its front, has anyone used these and found them good?
What are your views on baby sleeping positions/ flat heads etc etc?
I am 34 weeks preg with #1

IS IT TOO LATE TO MOLD MY 3 MONTH OLD BABY’S HEAD NATURALLY? PLAGIOCEPHALY AKA FLAT HEAD SYNDROME?
Mar 29th
Question by Lisa B:
Is it too late to mold my 3 month old baby’s head naturally? Plagiocephaly aka Flat Head Syndrome?
I have been trying to mold her head naturally by placing her on her side to sleep and pressing on the square parts of her head. Even though it feels too hard and I do not want to apply too much pressure. When I do press her head she is fine & thinks we are playing.
At this point nothing is working. I can’t buy a baby helment because they are way too expensive. Is there anything else I can do or buy that is affordable? If I were to get a helment would Medicaid in Missouri even cover it?
