Question by veronica.tung:
What do you do when your baby(10-month-old+) has a cold(runny nose, coughing, sneezing)?

Answer by livandjaxsmommy
My son gets sinus infections quite frequently, he doesn’t sneeze a lot but he coughs and has a runny nose, I use saline mist in his nose and then use a bulb syringe to get out the snot and I run a humidifier in his room, If it is a sinus infection his snot is green and he has to be on antibiotics.

BABY GETS EAR INFECTION WITH EVERY COLD? http://birthpolicy.org/356/baby-gets-ear-infection-with-every-cold/ http://birthpolicy.org/356/baby-gets-ear-infection-with-every-cold/#comments Wed, 10 Nov 2010 18:48:10 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/356/baby-gets-ear-infection-with-every-cold/ Question by Mama Bear:
Baby gets ear infection with EVERY cold?

Any parents out there with the same problem? My son is 8 months old. He has only had 4 colds so far, but each time he gets a cold, in a day or two he has a full blown ear infection. The colds I am not concerned about, because I know all children get sick (especially those in daycare like mine). I am more concerned that he doesn’t just get a cold, but instead it always turns into an ear infection which causes him to scream and refuse to eat. Is it too early to think about tubes in the ears?

Answer by Lilli
Having been through tubes in the ears, no, it’s not too early. Generally if they have that many that close together, you will be referred to a specialist who will nearly definitely want to do tubes. So ask your physician about seeing an ENT doctor.

Most children do exceptionally well with tubes – both the surgery and the aftermath. A few unlucky ones, like my child, do terrible, but that is very, very rare.

It could really be any of the above. My sinuses have been going crazy as well. We have a physicians appointment in the morning, but I need to get through tonight. Helpful recommendations anyone?

Unfortunately you can only do symptomatic care at this point. Tylenol is the only medication that can be given over the counter but you can use a humidifyer and saline drops with a bulb syringe. You can also sit with her in a steam filled bath room. Propping her mattress up ( from underneath with a blanket) can sometimes help them sleep with nasal congestion.

Good luck, I hope your tiny one is superior soon!

Answer by erlifesaver
Absolutely. Childrens ear canals are very short. Something as easy as burbing, vomiting or sneezing can blow fluid up into their eustation tubes (ear tubes). These tubes run from their inner ear to openings in the throat. It doesn’t take much to block them, and that causes pretty awful pain. It doesn’t always require antibiotics, but there is a great prescription medication called Auralgan drops, which immediately stop the pain. Your child might have a “tummy” bug as well. Watch for dehydration and high fevers not releived by Tylenol. Any concerns at all should be directed to your baby’s doctor.
