WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP BABIES WITH ASTHMA? http://birthpolicy.org/484/what-can-you-do-to-help-babies-with-asthma/ http://birthpolicy.org/484/what-can-you-do-to-help-babies-with-asthma/#comments Mon, 22 Nov 2010 00:34:20 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/484/what-can-you-do-to-help-babies-with-asthma/ Question by s. s:
What can you do to help babies with asthma?

Answer by Yahooligan
If Your Infant Has Asthma You Will Have To Take Extra Care
The lungs of an infant do not function as efficiently as the lungs of an older child. As a result, a severe episode of asthma can swiftly result in lung failure.
What To Do
Follow the appointment schedule for checking on your infant’s asthma. The physician will want to see your child regularly even if he or she is not having symptoms.
If your infant has asthma symptoms, act quickly. Follow the asthma control plan your physician made for handling symptoms.
Watch your infant closely for signs to seek emergency care. These signs include:
Breathing rate increases (to over 40 breaths per minute while the infant is sleeping).Count the number of breaths in 15 seconds and multiply by four.
Suckling or feeding stops.
Skin between the infant’s ribs is pulled tight.
Chest gets bigger.
Coloring changes (pale or red face; fingernails turn blue).
Cry changes in quality becomes softer and shorter.
Nostrils open wider (nasal flaring).
Grunting.
Be prepared. Do not wait until the last minute to learn how to handle an emergency. Have an asthma control plan to get to the physician or hospital that includes knowing how you will get there, how much it will cost, and who will watch your other children.
During An Asthma Episode DO NOT Do the Following:
Do not give your infant massive volumes of liquids to drink; just give normal amounts.
Do not have your infant breathe warm, moist air (e.g., the mist from a hot shower).
Do not have your infant rebreathe into a bag held tightly over his or her nose and mouth.
Do not give your infant over the counter antihistamines and cold remedies.

Is it true that having many colds will increase my babies chance of having asthma when he is older?

And how do I know he has it?

——————————————

Answer by mummy heffalump
I do not know but he might be getting lots of colds because he has allergies and might have a type of reactive airway problem. My son gets “asthma” when he gets a cold. He wheezes and requires a nebulizer but only when he catches a cold. I had to rush him to ER once. Check for wheezing, breathing problems, fast respiration. If your child seems to be catching colds often, you might want to ask your physician about possible allergies (mine is allergic to pollen, animals, dust–we found out after many colds that seemed to last longer than other kids). There are allergy medications to help control allergy symptoms that would help. But speak to your physician about your concerns.

WHAT TREATMENTS OPTIONS ARE THERE FOR TREATMENT FOR NEWBORN RESTPITORY INFECTION, ASTHMA,? http://birthpolicy.org/231/what-treatments-options-are-there-for-treatment-for-newborn-restpitory-infection-asthma/ http://birthpolicy.org/231/what-treatments-options-are-there-for-treatment-for-newborn-restpitory-infection-asthma/#comments Fri, 29 Oct 2010 07:53:12 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/231/what-treatments-options-are-there-for-treatment-for-newborn-restpitory-infection-asthma/ Question by Jose S:
what treatments options are there for treatment for newborn restpitory infection, asthma,?

My three week baby girl was admitted to the hospital with a cough and a tiny crakle in her lungs. The next day she got worse that they air lifted us to the twin cities in mn. We were told all her tests for virusus came back negative, and all bactirials were negative. The physicians in ICU told us she looked superior and she could be taken to the other section in the hospital that is not ICU.. That day and night they preformed all kinds of test to my poor baby. A spinal tap, catheders, blood and more blood x-rays she was crying and coughing unable to eat and she looked so tired. The next morning they checked her again and thought her lungs were tight, and then gave her a neb. This seemed to make her superior but then she started to loose color and her oxegen levels went down, they gave her another neb and then she went into respitory arrest. They are now breathing for her… Her lungs now look like if she has asthma or phneumonia. help my baby..

Answer by Doodlestuff
I live in Minneapolis and the hospital you were airlifted to KNOW the treatments needed. Something else is up if the nebulizer is not working or SEEMINGLY making things worse. You have my sympathies for going through such a trying time!

We already had a pet, It’s a bird… but I cannot spend time to my pet bird…also If I want to bond w/ them, they are scared with me..I want a pet that is not scared w/ me and to my baby brother w/ asthma….And also simple for me to care..What kind of pet it is?

Answer by Lucidia
The bird was probably your ideal bet. No animal will bond with you if you do not have time for it.
The other options I can think of are fish or reptiles.

Would like to hear from parent that have had babies with Asthma?

I have a nearly 3 month old baby. He had RSV, and they stated he might have asthma too. I would like to hear from parents that have dealt with asthma this young in an infant. How do you know there having an attack? He is not absolutely cleared of the RSV either. Thanks for any help you give me..

Answer by *My 4 Stars*
Honestly I never knew they diagnosed babies with asthma that young. All 3 of my boys have it. My 2 oldest were diagnosed right after they turned 1. My youngest who just turned 1 was diagnosed when he was 9 months. I have to give him breathing treatments twice a day right along with his older brothers. It’[s hard having tiny ones with asthma. Especially here in texas cause the weather constantly changes one day it’s 85 the nesxt day its 50 and windy. That causes asthma to act up alot. For my 3 yr old it’s weird because he adores to play in water. That makes his asthma act up. Not really sure why but it does.
