Question by foxylilalley:
If you had lead poisoning as a infant (at 3 months of age) could it lead to intermittent anemia and back pain?

What are the long term effects of lead poisoning?
Graham if it leaves out of your system at a rapid pace then why at the age of three did they have to take all the metals out of my blood and replace all the metals like iron back in. And at age 5 why did my lead levels go up for no reason.

I tend to have intermittent anemia and back pain so I am curious if it was caused by lead deposits.

Answer by circa 1980
Ooh…I’m curious to see what people will say. I have to take my 9 month old for lead testing as a precaution since our home is old.

To Graham below: I read that lead stays in babies and kids 50% more than with adults….so I think she has a good question here.

Can someone develop sickle cell anemia over a period of time? Can someone have sickle cell and was not diagnosed until they were 18yrs old? Is not this apart of the newborn screening?

Answer by TM
no i dont think you develop it. youre born with it. you just might not have any symptoms at first…. its hereditary.

I just found out that my infant has sickle cell anemia. Please answer this question about protein structure?

In laymans term, how does the amino acid substitution that results in abnormal hemoglobin have a drastic effect on protein structure?

——————————————

Answer by brandnewpunky
If the amino acids do not connect to build a protein correctly, then the protein is made abnormal. Because all a protein is, is a certain set of amino acids. If those amino acids continue to connect together incorrectly, then the proteins they create will also be made incorrectly. Hope this is what you were looking for!

Is it possible for a physician to diagnose a new born baby who is 2 months with sickle cell anemia?

I hear that you cannot tell until four months.

The reason that I am asking this is because I think that my cousin’s girlfriend might be lying about their babies sickness and has not been feeding her properly. I just want to make certain because I ask my cousin to go back to the hospital with me with the baby later.

Please let me know! Ideal answer will surely be given!

first off..it’s not your business…ask a Dr if they can tell…asking your friends is not the answer. (nor is asking strangers on Yahoo.)

Does anyone know what causes severe infant anemia?

My 6 wk old baby had severe anemia , low hemoglobin and required a blood transfusion. I was never told by the physicians what caused it. She has GERD..could that be a factor?
She was delievered by CSECTION @ 36 wks.

——————————————

Answer by keren
Was she born prematurely? My son required a blood transfusion and had GERD. Both were related to his prematurity (but the GERD did not cause the anemia.)

Can a pregnant mom pass anemia to her baby?

A heard this from a friend of mine but I am not sure if it’s true. Can someone prove or disprove this?

Thanks

——————————————

Answer by Speed Demon
it depends on what kind of anemia the mom has…. some anemia is just caused by pregnancy and this type would not be passed on to the baby, other types of anemia such as sickle cell anemia or hemolytic anemia are genetically passed on and there would be no way to tell if the baby has it till after they are born, so yes anemia can be passed on but its because of a genetic trait…. there are also types of hemolytic anemia that makes a newborn anemic because its blood type doesnt mix well with the moms and this anemia usually resolves itself though

I’m pregnant and anemic. Can the anemia injured my baby?

I’m 25 weeks pregnant and found out yesterday that I am anemic. I do not know much about anemia except that it has to do with my red blood cells and hemoglobin. My question is, can my anemia injured my baby at all? I am young (I turn 18 on the 23rd) and I am taking prenatal vitamins.

——————————————

Answer by Mama of 3
Shouldn’t harm your baby at all, i have it and my children (3) have no signs… Just take care of yourself and research it… CONGRATS! (on baby not anemia)

I’ve always been a tiny bit anemic and i had bloodwork done and obviously , The docter stated i was anemic and gave me some vitamins.
I really do not like them though cause the side effects ,
But i’ll keep taking them though unless its safe not to which i doubt it is,

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO TREAT ANEMIA AFTER GIVING BIRTH TO A BABY? http://birthpolicy.org/180/what-are-some-ways-to-treat-anemia-after-giving-birth-to-a-baby/ http://birthpolicy.org/180/what-are-some-ways-to-treat-anemia-after-giving-birth-to-a-baby/#comments Sat, 09 Oct 2010 06:32:51 +0000 admin http://birthpolicy.org/180/what-are-some-ways-to-treat-anemia-after-giving-birth-to-a-baby/ Question by couponcorner:
What are some ways to treat anemia after giving birth to a baby?

I have heard the iron tablets can deplete a bodies capability to absorb iron over time. So what are some other natural ways to treat/cure anemia (as a result of giving birth to a baby)?
Where can I purchase liquid chlorophyll? Is it available at Walmart or do I need to visit the health food store? I have one nearby but if it is something I can purchase some where else for less I would like to know.

Answer by tami l
eat foods that are naturally high in iron, like red meat, spinach, raisins, sunflower kernels. try reading the labels at the grocery store; you will be surprised by some of the foods that are rich in iron. a note of caution, though: be careful about mega-doses as too much iron can actually do serious damage to your liver.
