Feeding Picky Eater Baby
IF YOUR CHILD KEPT ACTING HUNGRY AT WHAT POINT WOULD YOU STOP FEEDING THEM?
Dec 14th
Question by S.Z.:
If your child kept acting hungry at what point would you stop feeding them?
My son is 15 months and I think he’s going through a mega growth spurt that has been off and on for the past month. Plus we’ve been more active since it’s summer.
But his appetite and thirst has not been like this since he was a newborn. He eats and drinks and then still wants more and I feel bad for not feeding him more but I do not know what the cut off is or should be.
I do not really know what to do… Feed him as much as he wants or cut it off after it seems to become absurd.
Here is an example… This morning I feed him one egg yolk and a piece of toast with no crust. As I am eating mine he keeps asking (more like demanding) I feed him some of mine. So he has about another yolk and some toast. (we eat our eggs english style where we dip it in yolk and do not eat the white because we’re sensitive to the white).
And then it’s all gone but yet he is demanding more. So he has about 10 blueberries. But then that’s gone and as he’s playing he finds a fortune cookie his dad dropped under the couch (it is the individually packaged ones). And he brought it to me to open and I felt bad that he found it and wanted it so I let him have it. But then it was gone and he wanted more… That’s where I just stopped and he did not get anything more.
But then he brings his sippy to me which was full of about 6oz of water and it’s empty and he wants more water. So I fill it and he drinks it down.
He’s been waking up early and he’s been hungry right when he wakes which is not usually the case. At all other meals he’s not been picky and a fussy eater like usual and always wants more.
And I have been hearing his tummy growl and he starts acting hungry when he just ate an hour earlier…
He’s a big guy for his age… I do not know the exact current weight and height but about 29lbs and somewhere around 34-35 inches and he’s 15 months. And he’s very active and high energy. And I have been noticing him growing, the rise on his pants are tight so he’s grown in length, and his shoes I just got no longer fit him… So I am certain it’s a growth spurt. But does this mean I should feed him as much as he wants?
But what would you do? Would you keep feeding your child until they were full or would you limit their intake even though they still seemed really hungry?
Also, he is not diabetic (already been tested) and he is healthy and everything has been normal, he’s been sleeping more than usual but I attribute it to being really active and in the heat during summer. And stools are normal, everything seems normal other than the increased hunger.
His Dr always tells me to do set portions and rememeber his tummy is about the size of his fist, so I am just worried I will over do it.
But he eats very healthy. He definetly has more than the suggested servings for fruit and veggies.
I also feel like if he’s hungry then feed him, but then it seems like he just will not stop eating. I always let him top off with some kind of fruit if he’s still hungry after a meal.
And we do cheese and peanut butter on toast or steamed veggies as snack.
But I think I am going to inscrease his portion size.
Becca, he doesn’t really do whole milk because he nurses. But we do whole milk yogurt which he loves… It seems to constipate him so I try not to give a lot of whole milk product.

Nov 21st
Question by proudmom:
Is your baby a picky eater?
Jack is 9 months old. He hates noodles ( I thought most babies loved noddles), he doesn’t like his food warm, he rather eat cold food. Sometimes its a fight just to get him to try something new. The only thing I never have a problem feeding him is grits.

NEED SOME RECIPES FOR 13 MONTHS OLD BABY (PICKY EATER) PLEASE..?
Nov 10th
Question by Eyecandy777:
Need some recipes for 13 months old baby (picky eater) please..?
What can I feed her for breakfast, lunch, dinner and in between. She is very picky and doesn’t like strong tastes at the same time I’d like it to be nutritional.
Also, she still chokes on her food, so I have to sort of puree all her food. Otherwise she chokes an throws up. But this is improving slowly, I blend less and less each time. She’s always been a bad eater.

HOW HARD IS IT TO RAISE A NEWBORN + 2YR OLD ALONE?? BREASTFEEDING, NEED SAFE ENERGY BOOSTS?
Nov 10th
Question by CrazyDaisy2k8:
How hard is it to raise a newborn + 2yr old alone?? Breastfeeding, need safe energy boosts?
Ok, well my husband’s getting deployed like after this weekend, and in a month or so I am gonna have a baby. Our first son just turned two and I need to potty train him(he’s off and on but right now it’s hard). I know I can take care of a newborn, but with a two year old!?! I am planning to give this baby breastmilk, so does that mean I can’t drink coffee?? What can I drink or take to boost my energy that’s safe? I rarely drink coffee at the moment and it sucksss because I do not like relying on natural energy and I miss my coffee… Well, I know I will be awake like 22/7 for the newborn and my son, but how will I survive? I have these freaky thoughts like I am going to forget to feed my son!! He’s a picky eater and doesn’t eat when he’s suppose to. And I am trying to get him off the bottle as well, it’s a toughy. I know he’ll be a good little boy to his new sibling, but I am kind of thinking he might throw a toy at he/she even if he’s just trying to be nice and share. And I know he’ll be like, where’s my attention too?? But I know he’ll be good, on his own will he helped feed his five or so month old cousin her bottle and showed her the rattles to calm her down…. And I have three dogs!! One is a full time inside dog, two are inside dogs by night or rain. I know they will not really bother the new baby, but I am kind of worried about having to take care of them and their messes as well. I know my family will help out a lot, but most of the time they piss me off to the point I need to move the hell out of here. They do not get along with my husband’s family anymore, so I have to take my son to visit them now(but not so bad since they live really close). I also need to finally learn how to drive now that I have the oppertunity. I feel like my schedule’s going to be hectic. Has anyone been through the same??
I’m just glad that in half a year, my husband will be back to finally take us away from this place and we’ll live happily ever after together, and like finally after two damn years of being apart!!

HOW TO DEAL WITH PICKY EATER – 20 MOS OLD?
Oct 29th
Question by Babyface:
How to deal with picky eater – 20 mos old?
Our baby has always been a picky eater. We were never were able to feed him from spoon. All we’ve been able to consisently feed him are hot dogs, sliced ham or roast beef, eggs, bread, and luckily bananas. No veggies whatsoever. Are we worrying too much? Or is it time for crash course – make him something healthy, if he doesn’t eat too bad let him scream and throw himself around, until he just so hungry over days and gives up and eats what we serve him? He is very stubborn and loud.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT MY VERY PICKY EATER?
Oct 29th
Question by Linotte:
What to do about my very picky eater?
My daughter is 10 months old and the pickiest eater. I feed her three times a day but I am lucky if she will eat at least one of those meals halfway. I have tried everything. When she first turned six months, I made her homemade purees and she rejected them a lot. I then tried store bought purees and she ate them superior but still rejected them more often than not. Than I tried giving her fist sized chopped veggies and fruits that she can pick up herself. She will throw most of them off her highchair and put only a few in her mouth. Very often, however, she will choke on them and end up throwing upmost of what she has eaten. People told me choking rarely happens with a self-feeding baby but it happens a lot with my baby. She is a great nurser but she is approaching 1 year of age and a person can’t live only on breastmilk forever. She used to be consistently in the 95 percentile for weight but now she has dropped to 80th (which is not a lot because she is over 99 for height).

ARE OR WERE YOUR CHILDREN PICKY EATERS? DID YOU GET THEM TO OVERCOME THIS? DO YOU HAVE…?
Oct 5th
Question by venous:
ARE OR WERE YOUR CHILDREN PICKY EATERS? did you get them to overcome this? do you have…?
…experiences & advice to share?
oh yes we have all been down this road… funny my oldest was very picky and sometimes would get a case of “Lock Jaw”… as an infant… about 4mos he would take one bite and somehow would accomplish the impossible.. chewing without swallowing… next time he tried this… i just put his food away.. tried again at lunch.. same results… and by the time dinner rolled around.. no problem… he ate.. my youngest was never picky… he ate everything.. i started to let them explore feeding themselves at 5mos… they were developing quite fast and were able to sit..it seemed to work better… at one point my youngest would just have a preference for peanut butter… my pediatrician check him over and said not to worry… of course i kept regular visits to the physicians when they would have these spells..
what were your experiences with “picky eaters” how did you help them overcome this habit? how long did it go on? if you are a grandparent… do your grands do this too?
care to share?

IS IT FAIR TO LET A TODDLER SELF-FEED IF HE/SHE IS A PICKY EATER?
Sep 12th
Question by A W:
Is it fair to let a toddler self-feed if he/she is a picky eater?
I know it is popular to instruct babies to feed themselves by the age of 2 years, but what if they are picky eaters and choose to avoid the veggies? Would not it make sense for the parent to maintain some control over the toddler’s feeding rituals? What do you think?
