Baby Feeding Problems
SUDDEN FEEDING PROBLEMS WITH NEWBORN?
Dec 16th
Question by Stevie:
Sudden feeding problems with newborn?
Last night and all day today, my daughter has been absolutely hysterical during feedings. I always get to her and begin to feed her prior to her getting to the point of crying so I know it’s not that. However, as soon as I begin to feed her, she starts chugging it like she’s been starving. She drowns herself and then begins to pull away from the bottle, so then when I pull it absolutely away to wipe her mouth, she loses it… wailing and crying uncontrollably. I give her back the bottle and she grabs at it as if to hold it in place so I do not take it away. When I try to stop to burp her, she loses it again and will not stay still. I do not know what to do. I talked to the physician and she said it could be reflux but they’re not sure and I have to come in next week to have her evaluated. In the meantime, every feeding now has become torture. She’s in such distress and I do not know what to do. She has a little congestion so we decided to try to flush out her nostrils in hopes perhaps it was because she was having trouble breathing. Not the case. I had stored some bottles in the fridge and was thinking maybe they were too cold for her because they were not warmed up enough. Also not the case. She had not had a bowel movement in 3 days so I thought maybe she was constipated and uncomfortable. Well, she finally had one tonight (it was of normal consistency) and she’s still freaking out. The only time she’s not crying now is when she’s asleep. I am not sure if she has gas pain or what? She gets herself so worked up that she coughs, chokes, spits up and gets hiccups. It’s so upsetting to see her in such distress and not knowing what’s wrong. I thought it could be reflux/colic especially since the physician said it could be it, but is not that when crying happens AFTER feeding and not during – or am I wrong? Can anyone help?
I’m using low flow bottles. I have been using them since she was born so I am pretty sure it would not be that otherwise I would think this would’ve been a problem from the very beginning. I also used to wait to burp her at every 1/2 ounce to an ounce, but since she’s been essentially drowning herself in formula after only a few sucks, I do it more often thinking maybe she’s filled with gas and I want to help relieve it. She often wails even louder shortly after she burps or even spits up a little bit.
I pump because she is even more hysterical when I try to breastfeed her…. Thanks for your helpful answer that was so relative to my question……..
I do not produce enough milk so I supplement with formula as well as breast milk that I pump. No need to be rude.

Problems with feeding infant.?
I have a 4 month old infant that I have been trying to feed infant cereal too. I am not having much luck with this, she spits it all back out, she cries sometimes. Has anyone else had this problem?
Should I just be patient and stick with it? It’s soooo frustrating!

BABY FEEDING PROBLEMS?

Question by Annie:
Baby feeding problems?
My daughter is 3 monthes old, and I just went back to work full time. My girl refuses to take bottles from anyone, also for these two days, when I went to feed her during my lunch hour, she would not even want to nurse from my breasts(she did not eat since 6am), and she would not take bottles in the afternoon either. She did not give big fuss, just quiet and seems ok without any milk. What should I do?

NEWBORN AND FEEDING PROBLEMS?
Jan 5th
Question by Brooke’s mommy. 10.15.08.:
Newborn and feeding problems?
I am a FTM of a little girl born Wednesday evening! I am exclusively breast feeding and it has been going well so far. My milk came in last night and she had 3 awesome feedings last night and a great one this morning. She was due to feed again at noon and I got her to latch on and feed for maybe 20 minutes. Halfway through she was choking and I burped her. After she detached at 20 minutes she spit a lot up.
I am just really worried that she is not eating well. I am calling the pedi tomorrow because she had to go have her weight checked and they need to do a third jaundice test on her because she is still yellow.
Any advice would be MUCH appreciated to alleviate all my worries!
She is still going to the lavatory regularly.

NEWBORN FEEDING PROBLEMS?

Question by E Dawg:
newborn feeding problems?
my little one and I was not discharged from the hospital at the same time due to the fact that she was jaundiced from her being exposed to my blood at birth. she latched on well in the beginning, then for the next few nights after I was released she was put on formula because the didnt want her to get dehydrated from the UV lights she had to lay under. I would go to the hospital for a few feedings the couple nights she was away. but I was not there constantly and the formula caused some nipple confusion. now she is home… and shes all of a sudden not taking to the breast well at all. I am finally engorged as the milk is now flowing in instead of colostrum. is my engorement causing a problem maybe? I will keep trying, is there any recommendations for this?

UPDATE ON PROBLEMS FEEDING INFANT.?
Nov 10th
Question by kmangel17:
Update on Problems feeding infant.?
Let me explain: I have done my reading on introducing baby food and what the signs are as to whether or not the infant is ready.
Let me clarify, I am not putting cereal in her bottle, you are not suppose do that (according to my Dr.), I am trying to spoon feed her. And when I do bottle feed her formula I hold the bottle, that’s common sense.
Also, she does fine with the cereal sometimes, and other times she just spits it out (sorry I did not clarify in the 1st question). I was just wondering if other moms had problems at first when introducing cereal.
She sees her Dr. next Wed. and I will be discussing the same things so I will update after that appointment.
Thanks you the replies so far!

NEWBORN FEEDING PROBLEMS?
Aug 20th
Question by curiousgirl:
Newborn Feeding Problems?
My baby is 15 days old. She is suffering from nipple confusion. I just started (yesterday) banishing bottles and trying to exclusively just breastfeed her. She will latch on for a bit then will fall asleep. I can’t wake her up. So when I am about to put her down to bed, she will keep crying because of hunger since she slept through the feeding and we have to do the whole process again and again.
She is not getting her sleep too, just around a 5-10mins and will wake up hungry and crying again.
Questions:
1. How long will it take to bring her back to breastfeeding?
2. Since she was used to big amounts of formula, and is not getting satisfied with breastfeeding, what should I do? I really do not wanna give bottles anymore?
3. How can I prevent her from falling asleep? If she would just be awake the whole feeding, I am sure she will get full sooner or later since I have good milk supply.
Thanks in advance everyone…
